Opal's P.O.V.

I couldn't move after a little while, due to the ice water restricting my movement. No one was going to save me. This is how I was going to die: at the bottom of a lake. I should have never said that to my dad. Of course, he never should have slapped me that hard.

Suddenly, someone else dived in. Maybe it was my dad. That wouldn't be so awful. We could talk things out. I'd apologize for what I said, he'd apologize for slapping me.

The arms of the dark figure scooped me up and swam upwards. They smelled of dead body's (ew, super gross) and cheetos. I only knew one person who smelled like that.

When he pulled me out, I gasped for air and expelled all the water through my nose and mouth, coughing it up everywhere. I was handed to someone.

"Are you alright, Opal?" I looked up once my eyes cleared to see the same blonde man staring down at me.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

"Same forest I hike in."

"Oh..." His skin was so warm... I snuggled in. I was shaking and shivering. I looked to see who saved me, and was surprised to see Uncle Masky with him.

"Don't be fucking stupid next time, alright?" he sighed.

When I saw my dad walk out the forest and towards the lake, he screamed. Looking at my skin, I realized I was blue.

"Shit, she's gonna fucking freeze to death." Masky sighed. BEN took off his green jacket and wrapped me in it.

"She needs a fire!" snapped my dad, ripping me away.

"Jeff, fire terrifies you-"

"I don't give a shit right now, my daughter needs it, just fucking get one started. He ran across the thin ice to land and laid me down, collecting twigs.

"BEN! You can set shit on fire!"

"Those twigs are damp..."

"Please! We have to try! For her!" My vision was fading. I sat, shivering and shaking on my dad's lap.

"Oh, fuck! Opal! Please, Opal, I'm so sorry... Please don't die... Fuck! Fuck, fuck, fuck! I don't want to lose my daughter!" he held me close to him.

BEN managed to set fire to the twigs, and my dad rested me near it. I warmed myself, barely able to sit up. It felt like someone was trying to cave my head in with a block of ice.

With BEN's jacket, my dad holding me close, and a fire, I finally felt like I was starting to get warm.

Suddenly, to my own horror, I noticed someone was removing my clothes.

"Masky, what the fuck do you think you're doing?!" snapped my father.

"Her clothes are soaked, done for. It'll help. Just wrap her torso in BEN's jacket and her legs in mine. We can get going home and put her in a nice bath soon after she... Stops being blue."

My dad was not letting go of me for anything, his arms were tightly around me, constricting air. I could tell he was furious with himself.

After a little while, he spoke.

"I'm so fucking sorry, Opal..."

"I know, Daddy... I deserved it."

"You didn't, you're just a kid. I left a scratch..."

"I'm really not upset, Daddy. Not anymore."

"... I wish your mother was here. Damn, she always knew what to do." Here we go with mom again.

"... No Dad, she didn't, that's why you loved her. She was incredibly imperfect, but she felt real. She could be hurtful and then caring." I hugged his arm.

"You don't know how badly I blame myself... For her death... Skully wouldn't have even hurt her if I had just never brought her here. I always come up with better ideas... After I messed up..."

"She still loved you, Daddy... And she doesn't blame you. We'll see her again, I promise."
