Mouth Sewn Shut

I had just put the first batch of cookie mix in the oven and had put the bowls in the sink to soak when Taylor stormed into the kitchen. My heart raced as he brushed past me to take Kyle from my arms. I re-filled the sink with warm water and soap highly aware of Taylor's presence by my side, his eyes following my every move. Collecting the last of the dirty plates and utensils I threw them in the sink as well but before I was able to was any of them Taylor grabbed my arm causing me to freeze on the spot with my arm still reaching for the sink.

"I think we need to have a chat Julie don't you?" Taylor finally said after a small space of silence.

"What about?" I asked innocently, focusing my gaze on the floor.

"Look at me when I'm speaking to you!" Taylor snapped out of nowhere.

My body jumped and my head swiveled to meet his gaze. The fierce look in his eyes caused my arms to shake violently under his grip, his grip tight enough to cause my skin to burn. Kyle stopped wriggling and watched the exchange between me and Taylor curiously, sucking on the sleeve of his top. Tears pricked in  the corners of my eyes and Taylor loosened his grip slowly but kept a hold on me.

"How did Jimmy die Julie?" Taylor asked like he was asking about the weather today.

"I-I was told that the police killed him...I wasn't there." I lied.

"And who told you that Julie?"

When I tried to break eye contact Taylor released his hand from my arm and used it to turn my face back towards him instead. His glare made it clear that if i didn't look at him there was going to be consequences so I did my best to look him in the eye.

"The police. They came to our door. They told me and Carrie that as soon as Jimmy had been found he was shot on sight."  A small tear ran down my cheek and my arms continued to shake more vigorously.

"Carrie was Tommy's new girl right? Who told the police about our family and made us seem like monsters?"

When I nodded he asked a question I didn't even think anyone would ask.

"What happened to Carrie?"

The breath caught in my throat, making a choking noise. Images of Carries corpse lying on the kitchen floor, blood pooling around her face that was permanently frozen in terror. Tommy with the knife that dripped with her blood...The last time I ever spoke to her all I did was shout at her and I couldn't change that.

I knew that Taylor would be able to tell that I was lying about Carries death if I tried because now every time I tried to get a word out it became harder to breath.

"She-She died..." I finally gasped pushing back the bloody memories of the day my life became ruins.

"How?" Taylor squeezed hard on my face and when I winced from the pain he squeezed harder.

"I asked how Juliet now answer me!" His voice rose and hardened causing Kyle's face to crumple.

"Tommy did it!" I let tears flow down my face.

Taylor freezed and didn't move until Kyle started to cry softly. He glanced at his son and then turned back to me who was still crying but not making a sound.

"Tommy...Killed his wife?" Taylor's voice was barley audio able because of how quiet he had suddenly become.

I nodded and Taylor's hand let go of me. Falling to the ground I wiped my face the best as I could as Tay took Kyle and left the room. Taking deep breaths I composed myself and stood up. My arms continued to shake as I reached for a clean glass from the cupboard and filled it with some water. I gulped the water down, coughing when it went the wrong way. Footsteps came plodding down the hall steadily until the came to a stop somewhere near the kitchen door. Setting down the glass I turned.

"Taylor I'm sorry -" My heart skipped a beat when I realized that Tommy had entered. He wore a cool expression on his face and looked at me curiously like a cat watching a bird.

"So...what did you say to Taylor Jules?"

"Nothing, he was just asking about Jimmy and Carrie..." I replied watching him as he approached slowly.

"I didn't ask about what he said Julie. I asked what you had said!" Tommy ran a hand down my face before squeezing it hard.

"I - I said that the cops had killed Jimmy..."

"And what about Carrie Julie? Hmm? What did you tell Taylor?" Tommy was on the verge of snapping.

I could tell by the tone of is voice that he already knew, he was just testing me to see if I would lie to him. However, I couldn't tell if whether or not me lying would've gotten me a worse punishment from him then telling Taylor about him killing his wife.

"I told him that you killed Carrie..." Barley having time to finish my sentence I felt a harsh sting erupt on my face after Tommy slapped me. I hissed in pain.

I kept my eyes closed as I heard Tommy open the oven door and drag out the tray of cookies. I jumped when the oven door was slammed shut with a large amount of force being used to close it.

"These cookies look good Jules, see for yourself." He grabbed my wrist and pulled me in front of the oven. Opening my eyes I saw my cookies where a pale golden brown and had spread to an even thickness. My mouth watered at the sweet aroma but my mind snapped back to reality when i felt Tommy sniff up my neck.

"Hell they almost smell as good as you do Jules." Tommy smirked and licked my ear.

Still holding my wrist he moved it above the burning metal tray until it was only inches away from scolding my skin. His other arm held me tightly around the waist but avoided the area where our baby lay.

"I never, want you to talk to Taylor about Jimmy, or Hunter or Carrie ever again...are we clear Julie?" Tommy's smirk widened as I nodded vigorously.

"Because Jules, if you it would be such a shame to ruin your beautiful face. So this will have to do for now." He whispered sweetly before bringing my hand down on the burning tray.
