Life was always so lavish with Irene around. She was a curious and amiable person. Fae always wondered if it was Irene that grew her curiosity of wanting to know more about the world. At a young age, Fae can remember Irene coming round with things like telescopes, cameras, compasses, watches and just sitting and fiddling with them for hours. Fae would lay her head on the table and ask a thousand questions like any young child. Irene would smile and answer all of them. The few times that she attended school, Fae loved it. She loved reading and numbers, math was always her favorite. She'd take Delilah's homework and do it for her. And between her time outlawing, she could be found with pen and paper, book in hand. It was the only thing that kept her sane while she was pregnant.
Night had fallen. Fae found herself in a small tin tub, that fit her perfectly. She held her knees to her chest, she'd dig into her skin with every stitch Javier would put in place. They sat in absolute silence. She could feel his disappointment fuming off of him like a bad smell. She tried speaking with him, but only got a yes or no answer.
"I'm sorry." Was her final attempt," I should have had Alice send help, but Irene and I made it out ok, and that's all that matters."
"You got stabbed Fae, you could have died."
"From a silly little stab wound?! You and I both know I've had worse, since when have you been such a drama queen?"
He stood, walking to the cabinet that sat in the back corner of the tent, putting back the medical supplies. Now she's angered him worse, not a word came from him.
"I know you worry but god damn." She shook her head," Sometimes you act like I'm no better than Tilly or Mary-Beth, like I haven't made a name for myself."
"You get reckless Fae, you let your title get to your head. And you or someone else always gets hurt." His words were scary calm
"What do you mean I let it get to my head? I let nothing get to my head. If anything you're the only one that lets shit get to your head. You over think and over react, like the goddamn world is ending." Fae stood stepping out of the bath, quickly dressing herself.
"You're smart Fae, I know you are. But sometimes you act like Bill or John, you act like a stupid fool who is bullet proof. You should have come back to camp, got us, and let us handle it."
"Oh yeah let the big bad men handle everything, because I'm just a fucking stupid reckless woman is that right? Did you know when I showed up, they were reading her last rites, and then asked her last words when I took my first shot. I couldn't have waited to come back, she would be dead. I would have lost the only mother figure in my entire fucking life!"
"Don't put words in my mouth, Fae." He finally turned away from the cabinet," I never called you stupid, your the smartest person I know. You act stupid though, and I'm disappointed in you because I know you know better. So come here so I can finish patching you up."
"No, fuck you." She picked up the tub of water," I'll go see Delilah for the night, and see you in the morning when you want to be rational."
"I'm not being rational?! You're the one getting fired up over nothing."
"No, I'm mad because you don't know what it means to be loyal to anything besides Dutch, you don't know what it means to stick around when you are most needed. All you know how to do when things get scary is run, that's why you left Mexico and that's why you fled when Maria died. Because you don't know what the fuck else to do except to be mindless to a leader. I'm surprised you've stuck with me this long."
She had truly defeated him and then some. He leaned against the cabinet, and shook his head. Fae didn't wait for his reply, she turned for the door. She dumped the water near the edge of camp, and set the tub back at the ladies tent. She jumped onto Tupelo, and hit the breeze.
