Your family moved to Mystic Falls a few months ago, and you've been able to make friends with some other kids at the high school. You actually feel like you've come to fit in pretty well, even though you haven't been in town anywhere near as long as a lot of the other kids have.
One afternoon, you go to the library with Caroline Forbes, one of your new friends, to do some research for a project for school. You're also interested in learning a little about the history of the town, so you begin to look around a section of the library with stuff about local history. In this section, you find a book of old photographs. As you're flipping through it, you stop when you see one that looks familiar.
There are three men in the photo. You recognize two of them as Klaus and Elijah Mikaelson. You know the Mikaelsons are a group of really old vampires, though to most of the locals they're just weird rich people. But you don't know the third man in the photo. Weirdly enough, you think to yourself that he's very handsome, more attractive than either of his brothers.
You start looking through the rest of the history stuff to see if you can find out anything else about him, but there's nothing, nothing at all.
"What are you looking at?" Caroline asks, looking over your shoulder.
"I'm looking to see if I can find out anything about him." You point to the photo. "Do you know who he is? I already know who the other two are."
Caroline looks down at the photo. "Yeah, I know who he is. That's Kol Mikaelson. He's Klaus and Elijah's younger brother, and he's also pretty dangerous. I wouldn't go looking for him. Klaus has him locked up in a coffin somewhere, thankfully, but you wouldn't want to go looking for it. The last thing this town needs is another Mikaelson on the loose."
You get what she's saying, but you're still curious. Once you're finished with your research, the two of your separate outside the library. You wind up ignoring Caroline's advice; instead of going straight home, you go walking around Mystic Falls, wondering where Klaus Mikaelson would have hidden his brother. Probably in a basement somewhere. You hope it isn't in Klaus' own basement, because you have no idea how you get down here.
Towards the edge of town, you see an old house that looks as if no one has lived in it for years. You walk up to the house and knock on the front door, but you don't get an answer. Cautiously, you open the front door. Looking in, you can tell that's this house has been empty for quite a while. You walk through the first floor of the house, but there's nothing there. You think about going up to the second floor, but the stairs don't look safe and you wouldn't want them to collapse underneath you.
You then find the door to the basement. There's no light switch, so you use the light from your phone to find your way down the stairs. Sure enough, there's a coffin, and the name Kol Mikaelson is inscribed on the front. You left up the lid and shine the light on the body inside. It looks like the man in the photo, but this man's face is gray, and he looks dead.
You notice there's a dagger in his chest. Maybe that's he died, probably how Klaus killed him. You carefully pull the dagger out, and close the lid. It doesn't seem right to leave the body lying there with the murder weapon still in his chest. After that, you leave, wondering why Klaus wouldn't just bury the body if he murdered Kol.

The next day, you meet and Caroline at the Mystic Grill to talk about your school project. While you're there, you glance over at the bar and freeze when you see two men talking together. One of them is Klaus Mikaelson, and the other is Kol, even though you just saw his dead body yesterday.
"What's wrong?" Caroline looks in the direction you're staring. "Oh, no. Why would Klaus let him out?"
"No, Caroline. I think it was me." You quickly tell her your discovery yesterday.
"He wasn't really dead," Caroline says with a sigh. "The dagger put him in a deep sleep, kind of like a coma. Removing the dagger is what woke him up."
You look back at the bar and see Kol hold something. It's your necklace, the one you were wearing yesterday. You didn't realize it was missing until this morning. You must have lost it while you were at that house.
"You wouldn't know who this belongs to, would you?" you hear Kol ask. "I'd like to meet the lady who freed me."
"Well, how should I know?" you hear Klaus snap. He leans against the bar and glances around, and his gaze lands on you. He gives you a suspicious look, and then he turns and whispers something to Kol.
"Just ignore them," Caroline whispers. "Maybe they'll go away."
"Why, Caroline, and a friend." Klaus is suddenly at your table, smiling down at you. "I don't believe you've met my brother Kol. He's recently returned to town."
"Hello, there." Kol gives you a smile and holds up your necklace. "Any chance this belongs to you?"
You nod and take it. "I lost it yesterday. Thanks."
"Well, of course. I felt I should return, since you must be the lady who undaggered me. I really owed you for that one. I would like to get to know you better if you would want to spend some time together."
You're not sure what to say, so you just nod. You would like to spend some time with him. You're not sure yet what kind of person he is besides what Caroline told you, but now that he's here, you want to get to know him.
