You've been travelling with Katherine Pierce for months, and you don't know whether you should be enjoying any of it or regretting all of it. You like Katherine very much, and you like being out on the road with her, but most of the time you have no idea where you'll be going next, and she doesn't tell you much about anything, leaving you in the dark almost all the time.
Finally, the two of you stop at a hotel for the night. You're glad to be able to get out of the car and get some rest for a while, but Katherine seems restless.
"We're in some run-down hotel in the middle of nowhere," you point out to her. "Whoever's after you, I don't think they're going to be looking here anytime soon."
"Oh, you don't get it," she snaps. "This is exactly the kind of place someone might come looking for me. It's a perfect place to hide if you don't want to be found. We shouldn't have stopped here. We should go."
"Well, hold on a minute. Let's just stay a little while. Since I doubt I'm going to get any sleep with you pacing around driving yourself crazy, why don't you tell me something about yourself, maybe who you think is after you and why you're always running away?"
"I'm always running away so my enemies can't get to me. If I stay one step ahead of them, I'll always be ahead." She sits down next to you. "I think you just haven't been with me long enough to understand how this all works."
"I know you used to be running away from the Mikaelson family," you say. "I know a bit about them, but you never told me why they would want you dead."
"Not them, Klaus," she corrects you. "It was always him I had to be afraid of. He would kill me if he had the chance, trust me."
"But why?" you ask. "What did you do?"
"I turned myself into a vampire so he couldn't kill me first. If I hadn't done what I did, I would have been dead over five hundred years ago."
"Well, I didn't know that. Why did he want to kill you?"
"He was going to use me in his ritual to turn himself into a hybrid, because I'm a Petrova doppelganger. But I escaped, and, after getting some vampire blood in my system, I hung myself, knowing I would wake up again as a vampire. After that, I had to go on the run, somewhere far away from Klaus. I knew he would hunt me down and kill me if he could. I also had to watch who I met and talked to; you never know who would and who wouldn't tell one of the Mikaelsons about me."
"So...you've just always been running?" you ask her.
"Yeah. Pretty much." She looks around the room. "But...I guess it doesn't matter if we stay here for the night. It's quiet, and it doesn't look like we'll be in any danger tonight."
"Hey, Katherine," you say, "Thanks for telling me a bit about you."
She nods. "Thanks for being a good listener. I'll shut up now so you can get some sleep."
You think about Katherine's story, and you realize something. "Hey, wait a minute. So, is it the Mikaelsons who are after you, or are we running from someone else now?"
"Oh, save that one for another night, Y/N, it's already late."
You sigh. It's going to be a while before you get to know more about Katherine Pierce.
