You came back to Mystic Falls with your friend Stefan, knowing he might need some help. And help is what has certainly been needed: Stefan has been getting himself caught up in a romance with Elena Gilbert, who happens to look exactly like Katherine Pierce, and old love of Stefan's; there was an incident with a girl named Vicki Donovan; Damon came back to town. Basically, the sort of problems you were hoping to avoid. But with Stefan's birthday coming up, you're hoping you can have a better day.

On the day of Stefan's birthday, you find him in the living room with none other than Lexi Branson, his other pal.

"Lexi," you say, surprised to see her. But you don't really know why you're surprised. Why wouldn't she show up for her best friend's birthday?

She gives you a strained smile. "Hi, Y/N."

Stefan looks between the two of you and sighs. "I should have figured this would be awkward."

"No, it's okay," Lexi says. "It's your birthday, Stefan. We're going to get along perfectly fine for your sake."

You nod in agreement. "Yeah. Everything will be fine."

You have always had a difficult relationship with Lexi, going back and forth between sort of-romance and then not seeing each other for months on end. You've wanted to have something with her for a long time, but there's always that nagging feeling that it's not right, that it would just turn out terrible in the end.

When you all go to the Mystic Grill in the evening, the two of you sit together while Stefan is with Elena.

"So, how have things been?" Lexi asks. "I heard some of it from Stefan, and it sounds like things have been tough."

You shrug. "It's been rough, I guess. I've been helping Stefan out, though. He's really into Elena Gilbert, and she's into him whether she admits it or not. You had any romances lately?"

She shakes her head. "Nah. You."

"No. I've been kind of busy."

"Mm-hmm." She nods. "Well, I was thinking about sticking around for a bit. We should hang out, for real. Try not to be so awkward. you know? You want to?"

You nod. "Yeah. I would, actually."

She smiles. "Great. I'd like things to be less awkward between us. In fact, I'd rather it not be awkward at all."

 "Neither do I," you say.

You've talked about this before, but you would like to think it could actually work.

But you never you never thought of the possibility that she could die that night.
