You have never been an outgoing person. You've always been more quiet and introverted. You do have friends and you know how to talk to people; you're not one of those people who stammers a lot while trying to talk to someone. You often just prefer to keep to yourself.
Damon Salvatore, however, is almost your complete opposite. He's very outgoing and adventurous, and you imagine that that's probably what gets him into trouble. But despite him being completely different from you, you like him. You don't know why; maybe that stuff about how opposites attract is actually true, and that's why you're attracted to him.
However, you don't really think he's attracted to you. You've met, and he's been nice to you, but he doesn't seem to have that much of an interest in you. You're not that surprised that someone like him isn't attracted to someone who doesn't talk much. You're not a fierce and outgoing beauty like Caroline, whom Damon apparently had something with when he first came back to town. And then there's Elena, whom Damon is clearly very attracted to. Elena is your friend, and you wouldn't hold it against her, but you are a little jealous of Damon's feelings for her.
You try to put Damon from your mind, and you try to think of other things besides him. You hope that if you try to ignore your crush on him, it will go away somehow.
One weekend day, you go out with your family for a picnic in the park. It's at times like this that you feel more at ease with yourself and your surroundings, and you feel like you can just relax and enjoy yourself more.
You happen to notice Damon Salvatore is also in the park. He's stopped on the path, and staring at you curiously. You don't know how long he's been there, but you give him a wave, and he waves back, still giving you that look.
"Is that a friend of yours, honey?" your mom asks you.
"Um, yeah," you answer.
When you look back, Damon is gone.

When you're walking home from school a few days later, you hear, "Hey, Y/N", and Damon is suddenly at your side.
"Oh. Hi, Damon. Uh, what's up?"
"Not much. Saw you in the park yesterday. You looked like you were having fun."
"Yeah, I was. Picnic with my family."
"Ah. I doubt Stefan would go on a picnic with me if I asked him. Hell, he'd probably think I was crazy if I asked him. But anyway, you just looked like you were really at ease and enjoying yourself. I don't mean any offense, it's just you're usually so quiet and tense. I didn't mean to stare at you like that."
"Oh. Well, thanks, I think."
"Mm." He nods. "You know, you should come by the boardinghouse sometime this week. You can come hang out, I can tell you some vampire stories, you can watch me drive Stefan crazy. What do you think?"
"Um, yeah, I could come over tomorrow, I guess," you answer.
"Great. I'll see you, then, okay? See you."
Damon gives you a wave and then disappears. You walk the rest of the way home with a smile, happy to receive an invitation specifically from him. Now you can't wait for tomorrow to come.
