Deep down, in her heart of hearts, Sophie Devereaux knew it had to be a bad thing to have romantic feelings for anyone from the Mikaelson family, even if it was Elijah Mikaelson. How could having romantic feelings for any of the Mikaelsons be a thing, given who they were and their history? Sophie herself didn't even like them. She doubted them sticking around New Orleans would do the city any good, either.
So, what was it about Elijah Mikaelson? He didn't seem to be much better than his siblings, but there was a certain something about him. He had this noble quality, the kind that made him seem chivalrous, the sort of man who would go and rescue a damsel in distress (not that Sophie thought she needed any rescuing at the moment). Of the personality he normally showed, he was the kind of man a lot of women would find attractive, but Sophie knew there had to be more to him than that.
"Why did you decide to move to New Orleans with your brother?" Sophie asked Elijah one day.
It was a cloudy afternoon, and they were only visitors there in the cemetery. Assuming the dead weren't listening, it felt a safe place to have a conversation about whatever might be between them.
"I thought it was best for me to be here with Niklaus," Elijah answered. "You know that. I don't think he would do well on his own."
"With the baby and Marcel to worry about?"
"Exactly. My brother is a very dangerous creature. Someone needs to be around to keep everything under control, and it seems that will have to be me."
Sophie understood what he meant. On every occasion she had seen the brothers together, Elijah was always the calm and collected one.
"That sounds like a dynamic Klaus could benefit from with you around," she remarked. "What about your sister?"
"Rebekah can be just as hot-headed as our brother. They don't always get along well because of it."
"Oh. What about Hayley?" Sophie asked.
There was a short pause. Sophie had noticed that there seemed to be a connection between Elijah and Hayley Marshall, the mother of Klaus' daughter. It was possible that there could something romantic between them, which was exactly what she didn't want to happen.
"Hayley and Niklaus have been getting along," Elijah said. "They've bonded through their daughter."
"And...what about you and Hayley? I noticed a connection there, you know," she added.
"There's nothing romantic between Hayley and I," Elijah said. "I don't think there will be at this point. She's supposed to be marrying Jackson Kenner, remember?"
"Oh." She nodded. "Right. Well, if you ever want to talk about it, you can with me."
"Why do you say it like that, Sophie?" he asked. "Why do you underestimate this?"
She sighed. "Because this probably shouldn't be. You and I, we'd be an unusual couple for sure."
"That doesn't mean anything." Elijah took her hand. "Would I be here with you if I didn't want to be, Sophie?"
"What about your family?" she asked back.
"I'll tell them, but not just yet. Soon, but I think we'll keep just to us for now." He bent down and kissed her, and when he did, Sophie forgot all about her conflicting feelings from before. There didn't seem to be a point to them anymore.
