A few days after the wedding, Lamar and Beverly caught a flight home once they were convinced Ashanté wasn't doing drugs anymore. Before leaving they had a talk with the registrar at the university, and helped their daughter return to school on her previous scholarship.

Keiko and Tiffany made beautiful bridesmaids, and Ashanté's former band served as groomsmen. For a wedding gift, Bryce bought Ash the latest Jeep Wrangler with all the gadgets. She surprised him with a physician's prescription for an anxiolytic.

"That doesn't mean I agree to perform in front of large crowds," she told him, "but maybe small venues would be okay."

As it turned out, Ashanté's appearances were usually sold out. Fans who couldn't develop rapport with an arena act found her accessible and friendly, and her growing fanbase remained loyal.

Bryce's label, Bucking Bronco Music, couldn't pay much in the beginning, but offered some interesting perks. Like a fair contract. And minigolf. And Polish dinners.

They sold the furniture in the blue room, and Bryce showed Ash how to spot the cameras there. He likewise proved he'd planted none in the guest room, the grey room, or anywhere else in the house.

"So why don't you remove them from the blue room?" Ash wondered aloud.

"Why waste them? We can use that room for making music videos. We can build different sets in there, or hang fabrics from the ceiling to create backdrops and such. The cameras film from every angle, so we'll get some great shots that just need to be edited together. I have a program for that. It'll be boffo. You'll see."

Ashanté rolled her eyes and returned to watching the entertainment news. Bryce sat beside her on the couch, thumbing through a smut rag that featured Jolene as the centerfold.

"Seriously, Bryce? You still find that crazy ho attractive?"

Ashanté folded her arms, and Bryce grinned. "Nah, I'm just glad she found another job. I'd hate to think I'd totally ruined someone so helpful to my career."

He tossed the magazine into the fireplace where it blazed up into ashes. He then swept Ashanté into his arms and proved to her satisfaction that he desired no one else but her.
