~Poppy's POV~

Serenity, Adeline, and I were seated around a small fire, keeping warm with wolves and a happy dog.

"Guys, I think the zombies are close by." I whispered, looking over my shoulder cautiously, expecting the undead to jump out at any moment.

"Poppy, you worry to much! Relax for a second, eat a few marshmallows." Serenity shrugged, throwing a marshmallow in the air and eating it.

We were currently sitting on a small island thing in the middle of a river, thus we were surrounded by water.

I still wasn't convinced, and continued to shiver at the edge of the 'island', keeping watch for any danger.

"Poppy, I MUST agree with Serenity. You're being too paranoid! We'll be fine." Adeline said, siding with Serenity.

I twitched nervously and looked over the water. Out of all our zombie stories, my background was the worst. In my opinion, that was.

I had been simply enjoying a wonderful movie, Puppy-Chan getting a haircut at an animal clinic.

I remember hearing tapping at my window. 'Tap. Tap tap. Tap. Moan.' I had looked at my window to see zombies.

I had always told myself that I would never be scared, even if Hoodie or Jeff the Killer had appeared right before me.

But nothing had prepared me for THIS. The shock of living alone in a house and suddenly seeing ZOMBIES at my doorstep.

One of them actually managed to ring the doorbell. I turned off the TV immediately and screamed, suddenly wondering if my parents were dead or not.

I had screamed 'YOLO IS A LIE' and jumped out one of the upstairs windows, making a run for it.

None of the zombies could keep up, but more kept gathering. Soon, all the zombies in town were gathered into a group. I realized Puppy-Chan was still at the clinic, and Minorue was stuck at the animal clinic also, for a checkup.

So I ran to the clinic, busted in with a crowbar, saw zombies closing in on Puppy-Chan and grabbed him.

I struggled with Minorue's cage for a while and she got out, but I had to make a run for it when the zombies got closer, and Minorue distracted them. I never thought she could've lived.

Suddenly, I heard a groan, snapping me out of my thoughts. A zombie was on my left, groaning from one side of the river.

Adeline and Serenity had noticed this too, and stood up, Adeline wincing a bit as she stood on her injured leg.

"We're trapped. I knew we should never have stopped here. I knew it." I whispered as I spotted more zombies on the other side of the river as well.

"Get ready to fight. Those zombies could be all over us in seconds." Serenity growled, and I reluctantly pulled out my samurai swords, which I had the whole time.

We stood there for a few minutes in battle poses, but the zombies just groaned, trying to reach us with their arms.

"I-I understand. They're afraid of water!" I realized, praising the river that had saved us.

"So... We're safe for now?" Serenity confirmed.

"As long as one of us is always watching." I said. "But eventually we need to find a way off of this island."

"I'll take the first watch." Serenity offered, and she sat down, monitoring both sides.

I sat down next to Adeline, wondering if she needed any help, with anything, and not just her bite.

"Need anything?" I asked. Deep inside, I knew we'd eventually have to tell Serenity and figure out what to do.

"How many times do I have to tell you? I said I'm fine!" Adeline snapped, causing me to reel back as if I had been hit.

It felt like it, since she was one of my good friends, and this had happened many, many times to me.

Before the apocalypse, I had four very close friends. A shared secrets, hung out, and did basically everything together.

But all that changed when they all grew cold, and distant. I never regained my closeness with them, and over time I stopped seeing them.

That was the best decision of my life. One day, they invited me to go to an amusement park with them. I was tempted, but I refused.

One, they were all being jerks. Two, I knew I had some stuff to catch up on, and I told them to go without me.

     Best. Choice. Ever.

It was there, where the first zombies appeared, attacking innocents and multiplying at a fast rate, just like rabbits.

Soon, everyone in the amusement park was a zombie. Some people closed it off from the outside world, and people bombed the park from a helicopter, killing all the zombies in the park. Including my 'friends.'

Sadly, somehow, a few zombies survived and escaped, spreading their disease like flowers at a wedding.

Thus, causing this huge mess everyone is in now. I'm not sure where the original zombies came from, but I know they must be stopped.

I knew it could be painful to lose friends, but it could be painful to gain them, too. As painful as losing them.

"Well, okay. You don't have to snap." I said, trying to act tough, but my voice came out as a whimper and was full of hurt.

I scooted away from her and sadness filled my eyes, and I sat at the farcorner  of the island, my knees up to my chest.
