 ~Poppy's POV~

Oh Gosh... Please no... I thought to myself as Adeline, Serenity, and I looked over the city, which was now covered in ash and rubble.

A recent phenomenon had caused a zombie apocalypse to occur, killing billions and leaving just a few people on this forsaken planet.

"We'd better go... It's not going to be safe on this hill for much longer." Serenity whispered, her eyes filled with shock.

Adeline nodded, but I just stood there, staring at the burning buildings, and the zombies roaming the streets that once belonged to us.

I remembered the close encounter I had had, where my dog, Puppy-Chan, was stuck in a building, with zombies closing in on it.

I had raced in and grabbed him just in time before the zombies reached him, saving both of our skins.

Puppy-Chan was now in my backpack, along with survival items in the front pouch, as Puppy-Chan was small enough to fit in the back of the huge backpack.

"Poppy? We need to go. I can already see some zombies trying to get up this hill." Serenity repeated, and this time I nodded.

We walked past a windmill and crossed through a wheat field, though a few gardening supplies had been left behind.

I grabbed a rake as we walked by, thinking that it could be useful.

Puppy-Chan wriggled around in my backpack, as he did not like it, and under normal circumstances I would just put a leash on him.

But not now. It was too dangerous to risk anything now. It was either put Puppy-Chan in my backpack or...

... And I couldn't accept that. So I decided to put him in my backpack for the time being.

We were all quiet as we trudged along towards a barn near the wheat field, and I looked around nervously.

"What if there are zombies here? What then?" I asked anxiously, searching for any signs if the vicious, ugly things.

"I don't think they've reached this far, yet. We'll be safe here for the night, I think." Adeline commented.

"Okay, let's go." Serenity said, leading the way to the deserted barn, which was filled with hay bales and pens, meant for animals of different kinds.

There was a large, bold, bloodstain on the ground, which made me look around for any bodies.

I couldn't see any, but Puppy-Chan was wriggling around just from the scent of blood, making the backpack harder to carry.

"Puppy-Chan, stop moving around so much! You'll lead the zombies right to us!" I whispered, shushing him with a small piece of hot dog.

"Okay, let's get out sleeping bags set up. I'm pretty sure we'll be safe here. Just in case, we'll take watches. Poppy, do you want to go first?" Serenity asked.

"Sure. I can tire out Puppy-Chan at the same time, too, so he won't give us away later." I decided, sitting on the wide rafters where we had set our sleeping bags down, holding Puppy-Chan in my arms.

"Goodnight. I'll take the next shift. Wake me up when it's time." Adeline yawned, lying down.

"Okay. Sleep tight. It may be the last chance we have." I whispered.

I watched the door for any signs of danger, stroking Puppy-Chan's head at the same time, my eyes wide and alert.

Soon after I was sure there was no danger, I heard a moaning sound.

"Oh no... Oh no oh no oh no... Serenity! Adeline! Wake up! The zombies have found us!" I shook them both, and they got up immediately.

"The zombies?" Serenity gasped. "Poppy, put Puppy-Chan back in your backpack, now!" I obeyed without question, stuffing Puppy-Chan into my backpack as carefully as I could in the given situation.

Adeline took up the rake I had picked up in the field, holding it as a weapon. Serenity grabbed a gun, and I did so, as well.

"Get ready." Adeline whispered as there was pounding on the door. "We may have to fight our way out."

"There's a sunroof thing on the ceiling of the barn loft. Maybe we can get out that way?" I suggested hopefully.

"Okay, it's worth a try. Come on!" Serenity gestured to the loft, and Adeline and I followed her to the door on the roof, and we climbed out onto the roof, and we saw what was below us.

At least thirty zombies, surrounding the barn.

"Uh... Noise distracts zombies!" I blurted out, picking up a rock that was on the roof and throwing it as hard as I could into the field.

Half of the zombies turned and walked towards the sound, while about thirteen zombies stayed.

"What are we going to do now?" I whispered.
