17 months ago:

i tried calling clementine, except it was 12 in the afternoon here, and 10:30 p.m. over in san jose. so i left her a message.

um, clementine? hey. its me. calum. your probably asleep, or busy with johnny right now. i'm about to head out for tour again. um, you're great. i hope you have a great time in san jose. hope you have great experiences. i know i'll try to. um, you're-i-um, i'll miss you. much love, clementine. b-bye.

we're 3 hours into the flight. i was asleep, and then my phone vibrated really hard.

missed call from clemenshine :-) <3

i was about to call her back until something else popped up.

new voicemail:

hey calum, hope you have a great time on tour. i'll miss you calum. thanks for the message. i don't know what to say other than, you're great too. don't do anything stupid, i still need you in my life. love you cal. have fun. much love, calum. bye.

-

its been a year and 5 months. i haven't talked to clementine in 1 year. the last time we talked was when i was in los angeles, to perform. but she only came to 1 concert, she didn't have time i guess.

we're coming home.

after the tour, we stayed in l.a. for 7 months more, our families visiting us every over few weeks. now we're coming home. we have another time off. 7 months. yes!

-

when we get home, our families are so happy. clementine's family was there at my house too.

i walked back to the living room after unpacking a couple things in my room, to find mrs. rogers, haley, and curtis in the living room with our families.

"calum!"

"mrs. rogers?"

"yes, its me. oh my goodness haven't seen you in such a long time!"

"more than a year haha."

"yes, you're...?"

"20 now. haha."

"oh you're so old. clementine's birthday was 2 weeks ago. she's 20 now too."

"i know, i tried calling her to say happy birthday but she didn't answer."

"oh she's probably busy with her fianceé."

"w-what."

"she's engaged! hasn't she told you?"

"no, we haven't spoken for a year."

"oh, then um, she's coming next week. if that makes it any better?"

"why isn't she here? wasn't she supposed to be here 4 months ago?"

"y-yes. but she wanted to stay with her fianceé a while longer."

"stop saying that."

"fianceé?"

"please. stop."

"oh, i'm sorry calum."

"it's-its okay. um, so she's for sure coming next week?"

"positive."

"is she pregnant too? is she on drugs? what else does she have going on that i don't fucking know about?"

"calum!"

"i'll be in my room. sorry everyone."

i ran upstairs into my room. i'm 20 fucking years old. get over her calum.

nope. i never could. never ever.

i've had done stuff with groupies, thought girls were pretty, but nobody was on my mind more than clementine. nobody could replace her. she's just one of those girls you just will never get over, until they tell you they don't care about you.

everytime we sang heartbreak girl on stage, there was really only one girl i could think of. and her name was clementine.

-

the next day my mom came in to talk to me.

"calum?"

"yeah mum?"

"what you did last night, was not okay."

"i know mum. i'll go apologize later today."

"good. but why did you get so angry?"

"you wouldn't understand."

"you'll never know."

"i'm...i'm in love with her mum, i really am." i told her while breaking down.

"oh calum. for how long?"

"since the day i met her."

"oh my dear calum."

"i don't know what to do mum."

"david!"

"no mum!"

"he'll understand, calum. trust me."

she left my room. i heard whispers coming from outside my door and then my dad walked in.

"calum?"

"yeah, dad, i know. its stupid. she's just a girl, i should get over her. but the thing is dad, she's not the kind of girl you get over, she's just one of those-"

"calum!"

"y-yeah?"

"i know how you feel. i had the same problem like you."

"who was it?"

"her name was rebecca lang. she was an asian girl. even though, my parents thought i should've forgotten about her, i just couldn't. she was the only girl i thought of. she was very special to me."

"then what happened?"

"she got a boyfriend. and then she moved towns. i never once saw her again. until i turned 25, that's when i knew i didn't care about her anymore. i met your mum."

"so do you ever think about rebecca anymore?"

"there are days where i wonder how she's doing. but then i turn and see your mum. then it all blows over. because now i have something better than rebecca. and hee name is joy."

"so what you're saying is, i'll get over clementine eventually?"

"no. i'm telling you, that once you find thag right girl, which it may or may not be clementine, that's when you'll realize."

he got up and started heading for my door to leave.

"realize what?"

he just smiled and walked out the door. my dad is so confusing.

-

around 7 p.m, i went to the rogers house to apologize.

i take a deep breathe and hope her mom doesn't yell at me.

*knock knock*

"that's really funny mum-"

she froze. it wasn't mrs. rogers, it was clementine.
