I knew I had given something away when I looked away and went silent when Kalinda asked what happened to people if they breathed air for too long. I mentally kicked myself and made an excuse to leave. I left in a hurry and I knew she would want some answers when I got back but it didn't matter at that moment as long as she wasn't here to witness me losing myself to uncontrollable tears. I sat on a park bench under a huge tree, my face in my hands as I cried. The memory of my little sister coming back to haunt me as I had a flashback to that fatal day 2 years ago.
"Moonika" said Mum as she shook me awake. I rolled over and looked at her sleepily. "Will you please look after your sister while we go out and do some messages?" Mum asked. I mumbled my agreement as I got up out of bed and went over to my wardrobe, picking out a blue silk dress. Mum left me to get dressed and when I was finished I walked out to the dining area, finding no-one there I went to find Lunette. I opened her bedroom door and found she wasn't there, I ran back to the dining area, starting to panic. "Lunette?" I called out. No reply. I started searching each room and each one that was empty made me more and more paniced. I ran out onto the sandy street of Chandra looking in all directions. I started running towards the big rock at the end of our street hopeing she was up there. I frantically ran up the rock steps and when I got up to the top she wasn't there. I stood there looking over our small town. Then I looked up through the seawater to the surface, What if she went to the surface? I thought. I ran down the steps and back into our house running into my room to my wardrobe pulling our a pair of purple flat shoes. Then ran back out along our street to the rock steps that led to the surface. I stumbled up them, panic overtaking me and fighting to keep my vision clear through the tears welling up in my eyes. When I reached the top step I was about fifty meters from the surface I leapt off the step and started swimming up, breaking through the skin of Chandra. The surface got closer and closer until I finally broke through. I looked around and saw a small body with dark hair laying on the sand of the small beach nearby. Lunette I thought as I swam to shore and ran along the sand using the small amount of energy I had left. I kneeled next to her and rolled her over she was unconsious and breathing in small ragged breaths. I had to get her to the water I thought. I picked her up and carried her to the water sitting down with her in my lap. "Come on Lunette, stay with me please" I begged her as I pulled her head into the water hopeing she would breath it in before it was too late. After a few minutes I realised it was too late to save her. She was dead and it was all my fault.
I made my way slowly back towards Kalinda's house feeling numb and heartbroken staring at nothing as I went.
