I woke up early in the morning, it was still dark outside but the birds were chirping their morning song. I rolled over and looked at my watch it read 4:57am. I got out of bed flinching as my feet touched the cold wooden floor. I could only just make out the door as I walked slowly over to it, my hands trying to find the doorknob. Finally I found it and swung the door open, I crept quietly down the hall so as not to wake the others. I went down the stairs into the kitchen skipping the seventh step as it had a squeaky board. I went to the fridge and pulled out a jug of milk before rumaging through the contents of the pantry to find some cereal.
I heard someone moving around upstairs as I got my bowl of cereal and went to the dining table to eat. I was slurping down the last of my breakfast as Moonika walked in, she walked straight to the cupboard and pulled out a glass then rushed to the sink tap.
"What's the rush?" I asked. She jumped out of her skin as she realised i was there watching her.
"Oh Kalinda I didn't know you were there!" she gasped. I stood up and went over to put my dishes in the sink.
"Are you alright?" I asked her seeing that she was downing the water in record time. She half nodded still drinking.
"Yeah I just woke up a panic I don't know why but I keep thinking i'm forgetting something" she explained.
"Well we had better start getting ready for our journey" I said as I walked towards the stairs.
"Yeah" Moonika agreed. I crept back to my room and opened the curtains before grabbing my pack. I had slept in my clothes so as not to wake up my parents and sister in the morning. I walked back out of the room and headed to the spare room. I walked in to see Moonika sitting on the bed staring into space. I threw my pack onto the bed next to her snapping her out of her daydream.
"Hey, you ready to go?" I asked. She looked at me for a long second before returning to her senses.
"Yeah sure thing" she replied and stood up grabbing her pack from the floor. I swung my pack onto my back and headed towards the door Moonika following. We went back downstairs and out the door as quietly as possible. "Where are the horses?" I asked.
"Over here" Moonika replied as we headed towards a shed not far from the house. She opened up the large wooden door revealing a stable setting inside complete with haybales and two beautiful horses. One honey coloured with a light blonde mane and tail and the other was dark brown with its mane and tail dark brown going lighter at the tips.
"She's mine" Moonika said as she pointed to the dark brown horse. "I'm going to name her Luna".
"Does it mean something?" I asked.
"Yeah its the name of the moon goddess, its a beautiful name fit for a beautiful horse" she smiled.
I nodded and looked at my horse before walking up to it and patting it softly on the head. "Hey there" i said quietly. "Moonika is it a boy or a girl?" I asked. She laughed and said it was a girl. "I don't know what to call her" I said.
"Don't worry Kalinda you will think of the perfect name" Moonika said as she got on Luna. I put the saddle on the horse and got up nearly falling over the opposite side, it had been a while since I had ridden a horse. We walked our horses out of the stable and down the gravel driveway, once the horses were used to us riding them we broke into a gallop down to the main road. Before turning and heading inland towards the mountains that rose up on the edge of the town.
