The mother of the Nine Muses is Mnemosyne, a Titaness, and the Goddess of Memory and Remembrance. Their father was Zeus, the King of Olympus and husband to none, at the time.

The pair met when Zeus went to Pieria and was moved by Mnemosyne. As enchanted as he was, he stayed with her for nine consecutive nights and made love to her nine times. Mnemosyne conceived and gave birth to nine daughters.
In order of birth from the eldest to the youngest, the girls were Calliope, then Clio, Melpomene, Euterpe, Erato, Terpsichore, Urania, Thalia, and Polymnia.

After this encounter, Mnemosyne gave the children to Apollo, the God of the Arts and Knowledge, and Eufime, a nymph, to raise and care for.

It is said that as they grew up it became clear that the beautiful girls had an inclination towards the arts they were taught by Apollo. They had no interests in anything else, including the lives of the humans; nothing else by the arts and its creations.

Apollo took them to the grand and beautiful Mount Elikonas, and since then, they created and lived on as inspirations to Man.
