I stood there for a solid 20 seconds, unmoving like granite. Tick. Tick. Silence, a body, and my thoughts. "Oooh, crap." I suddenly exploded into action, calling the Health Service while screaming my head off. Librarians came rushing into the room to reprimand me for the obnoxious noise, but soon started to panic as they saw Micah. Everything was an explosion of lights, sounds, and colors. Nothing took hold in my memory. Sirens blared and I vaguely felt that I was being pulled away into the sidelines. I don't know. I don't know what happened. I repeated the phrase over and over to myself and the HS members, numb to the core. What just happened?
I stood outside of the library in the snow, blanket surrounding me. The entire building had been cut off and anyone who was inside interrogated. My headset was ringing with interview requests and family. Friends and strangers. I ignored it all, staring straight ahead into the looming darkness. "Miss," a HS attendant said, "Are you okay? Do you require anything?"
"I... I-I no... no, I don't think so." She looked at me sympathetically. "Okay," she said softly, "Just let me know." She walked off to join those who had Micah on a stretcher, ready to fly him to the hospital. I knew I should check on him, but I couldn't bring myself to walk over. "Relax," I chided myself, "It's not like... he's dead or anything?" Maybe he was. Maybe he wasn't. And right before graduation too. Didn't he tease me about not graduating not too long ago? I laughed deliriously, earning a few strange looks from other witnesses. Today was supposed to be fun. A little bit of study before the big day. I stumbled forward through the padded snow, neglecting to give the workers notice.
Trudging through the snow, I made it to my bike. "Everything is fine~ Everything is fine~" I giggled manically, hopping on and starting the engine. "Nothing happened today!" I told myself as I sped off in search of the Altediatriba dorms, "Nothing happened at all!" The wind whipped through my hair, bringing a childish smile to my face. The marble building grew into view, rising like a leviathan out of the deep. I pulled on the brakes, hard enough to almost flip the bike onto its front. I strolled in like a ballerina, twisting and skipping. Running up the stairs, I flung open the door, unlocking it with my key. I rushed in, ignoring Marilyn. Ignoring everything. I slammed into a wall on the way to my bed, but only laughed. When I finally made it, I collapsed into the soft sheets. The welcome embrace of sleep took me, and my world faded into darkness.
