Glancing at him, I tried to glean if he was telling the truth. I couldn't tell. Maybe I was just bad at reading other people's emotions or something. That was probably the case. I hadn't socialized with other humans as friends since- The blank spot appeared in my mind again. I spent a fair amount of my time spacing out and trying to remember who it was. Eventually, I came up with Mark. Yeah. "Mark" sounds just about right. The Administrator finally started the L section, after what seemed like (and probably was) 40 minutes of sitting silent in an overly gaudy baroque hall.
I stared, bored, into the sea of students, hearing a river of nonsensical words from the Administrator flow into one ear and out the other. Apparently staring at a bunch of people is good for passing the time, because before I knew it Micah was being called. "Lambert, Micah." The Administrator had successfully killed everyone's eardrums again. I should call the Enforcers on her. First-degree murder, you know? Micah shrank down a little, curling his shoulders as he scurried to the stage, attempting to avoid the smouldering jealous eyes of the others that didn't make it. The Administrator just handed him his T.O.P and he bowed before scurrying back to his seat.
Nothing interesting happened from the L section foward. The girl next to me, Ella, didn't get called and neither did anyone around me. But seriously, I expected less people to be called up. Like maybe just one person for each letter in the alphabet or something, because this is definitely way too long. No one knows how long it would have been if everyone was called. Probably would take all day. I eventually devolved into staring at the fancy patterns on the ceiling again. Just staring. Counting the swirls and the ridges. Waiting. Waiting for anything. The continuous screeching of the Administrator prevented any escape by means of sleep or a nap, so it was basically the Fields of Punishment.
Micah was staring at his T.O.P, finally not paying attention to anything. From what I could see he was admiring the crap out of his T.O.P. It was almost as if he was already envisioning a pedestal to put it on once he got it home. Weird. I was just going to scan it and then throw it somewhere on my desk. I mean, who's gonna look at it? Not me. It's just basically a piece of synthetic paper with words printed on it. Nothing that I needed nor would help with my already cluttered desk. On second thought, maybe I should just trash it and leave it to be ejected into space. Seems like a better idea anyways.
I wasn't called up to the stage, and neither was anyone else after the M section. Apparently the staff this year had picked to many students this year to receive their T.O.Ps on stage, and they were already running late. In addition, due to one of their many "policies," the Administrator couldn't cut anyone off the list during the ceremony. I guess no one checked the list before graduation. Horrible planning, if you ask me. I stood up, folding my chair into its pocket size and handing the cushion to one of the ushers in the ally splitting the chairs in half.
Micah stood after me, although not before tucking his T.O.P somewhere safe, presumably. I glared at Nyxia, remembering my newfound rivalry with her. Maybe I should formally ask for a Duel. I believe they are allowed after graduation, so I wouldn't get arrested. Although, I haven't gauged her ability to fight yet, so I'm not sure that would be the best idea. Would I have the uphand with mobility? Are these pants better than wearing a dress when it comes to kicking? One thing for sure is that her kicking me would leave a huge mark. Look at the size of those stiletto heels. Crazy. I must have been glaring the whole time I was lost in thought, because Nyxia saw, made a face, and presumably started making her way over here to yell in my face. "So," she drawled, "Have a problem with me?"
"Oh, me? Not at all." I smiled with all teeth.
"I see. Well then, sweetie, you better explain that glare."
"Oh you must have seen that wrong. I was glaring at your friend. She was draping herself over my friend." Not true, but what can you do when an unexpectedly extremely tall person starts shoving their bust in your face? Nyxia looked at me skeptically. "Okay," she said, "Just keep your petty glares to her." I nodded stiffly, refraining from punching her in the face. "Oh, and sweetie?"
"Yes?" I replied through gritted teeth.
"Might want to wear a dress next time. Although I will admit you look ravishing as a boy." She sashayed away again, the crowd parting for her. I stood there, unfeeling. Was that all she had? I laughed hard, a sort of crazed laughter almost like an asylum patient would make. People all around me turned and eyed me like I was mental. And maybe, just maybe, I was. If challenging her took away everything, then so be it.
