My alarm clock shrieked, cutting through the darkness and ripping me from sleep. I shot bolt upright from the sheets, gripping my blanket tightly. Breathing heavily, I groggily rolled over to check the time. Why was I up so early? Bing! A notification appeared on the top left of my headset. I read it as I brushed my teeth, muttering the words under my breath. "Hello student attending Teminibrook Altediatriba," I read, "This is simply a reminder to tell you that you are graduating today at 1:30 sharp. Please come at least 15 minutes earlier in preparation. Thank you for attending and we wish you good luck in the Academia." I merely swished and gargled after reading the message. Why was I not surprised? This had to be the first time someone had ever graduated early, and I was the one holding the title. Despite the immense joy and panic at my news of graduating early, I felt like something was missing.
I scanned through my memories of the past day. Dissection lab, annoying preppy girls, tea, library study. Nothing out of the ordinary. No matter how much I tried to convince myself I wasn't missing anything, I still felt like there was a gap. Unfortunately at this moment, Marilyn barged in. She screamed, "ARE YE DONE WITH THE BATHROOM YET?! I HAVE CLASSES TO GO TO AND PLACES TO BE!" Her Irish brogue was really showing through.
"Jeez. You don't have to be so loud," I groaned.
"WHAT?! Also, what it that you're reading?"
"Graduation letter."
"WHAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!!??!?!?!?"
"Marilyn. I'm sure you can hear me, right?"
"NO, I REALLY CAN'T. SPEAK UP!"
I finally pulled together enough sense to figure out that she wasn't going away until I yelled back or show some reaction to her provocations. I sighed, ran a hand through my messy hair, and sucked in air. "I SAID, I GOT A GRADUATION LETTER FROM THE SCHOOL. I WILL BE LEAVING SHORTLY TO PICK OUT CLOTHES AND EAT."
"There ye go! And by the way, top of the mornin' to ya!" With these words she left. I couldn't help but throw a towel at her as she turned into the kitchen. She looked back at me after the towel hit her, and I took this opportunity to say, "Even I know that that phrase is so cliché, and you're half Irish! ARE YOU TRYING TO RUIN MY DAY WITH YOUR MINDLESS STEREOTYPICAL PHRASES?!"
"No! I'm just trying to piss ye off."
"And you have succeeded," I muttered. Closing the bathroom door, I trudged over to the bedroom and bunks to dress in something more suitable than pajamas. Finally selecting sweatpants and a hoodie, I took my keys off the hall tree and headed towards the door. "Stay safe!" Marilyn called.
"You know I will~"
"Yeah right!" She teasingly whacked my arm. I laughed and walked out to my bike. Perfect. It was just beginning to flurry- wait. I scourged my mind again: Why did the perfect winter wonderscape bring such a pain? I shook my head to clear my thoughts, revved the engine, and headed in search of the mall. The drive was pleasantly unexpectedly smooth, seeing as there were only some accidents on the highway. Pulling into the parking lot, I marked my spot on the system and made my way in.
The sliding glass doors revealed that the place was packed, probably because of all the upcoming graduations. Speaking of that, what time did I have to get to graduation again? I checked the email. "Okay," I mumbled, "still got three hours." I frowned. "That's nearly not enough time!" I started scrambling around the shops, quickly picking out what I wanted to wear and bring to the Academia. Eventually, tired of the frantic running, I sat down on a bench with about half and hour left. I took a five minute break before standing up to resume my frantic spending. As soon as I stood up, however, I bumped into someone. Someone I was very acquainted with. "Oh hey, Kaede! Didn't see you there!" I smiled.
"Hey Mark! Who's that? Looks like you've gotten a new friend!"
"Oh, yeah. I met him when he came to get some tea. We started off conversation and Boom! Here we are grabbing clothes from some random stores for graduation."
"Oh yeaaaaaah. You actually go to school. I remember that!" Mark's new friend hadn't introduced himself, or do anything other than stand next to Mark for that matter. Maybe he was just shy. As Mark droned on and on about his day, I waved at him. As his eyes connected with mine, the pain in my head exploded. I gasped a little, and slumped against the seat. "-and I totally didn't see it coming, you know? And- oh hey are you okay?"
"I-I'm fine..." I said, trailing off. It still felt like there was something I was missing. Like a chunk of my hippocampus was gone. Mark squinted suspiciously at me before resuming his rant about girls. His talk went on forever, but eventually left me alone with his friend on the pretext he needed to 'eat something.'
"So... whazzup man?" I said. "I don't think I have the pleasure of meeting you! I'm Kaede, if you didn't hear from Mark already."
"Hey Kaede... how are you? My name is Micah"
