"Yeah. I guess...?" He replied, uncertainly. I playfully punched his shoulder, "Hey, you're in this Wing, aren't you? That means you are!" He laughed nervously and rubbed where I punched him. We eventually lapsed into an awkward silence, despite the bumblings of the others in the Wing. I fidgeted with some random items I had in my blazer pocket. For the record, I somehow managed to find two units worth of coins in my pocket, a crumpled origami crane, and a coupon to a nearby restaurant. I starting stacking the coins on the empty seat next to me, swiping off the cushion to expose the cool simulated wood underneath.
I eventually was able to stack two coins in a row, edge to edge vertically. I was about to stack a third, when a figure approached. I looked up to see another student. She smiled nervously and waved, her sweater dropping off her shoulder and over her hand. I glanced at her, confused. "I thought we were supposed to wear formal? As in... not a sweater?" Her face reddened, and she pulled her sweater back up so that it wasn't slipping below her shoulder. "F-formal wear? I-I know that," she whispered, "B-but I had to give it to my friend because she didn't have any clothing e- even close to formal." She fidgeted with her hair, curling it around her finger. The longer I stared at her, the more restless she seemed. Her fidget with her hair had become worse, and her eye was twitching a bit. Glancing suspiciously, I slowly removed the coins from their stack on the chair next to me, and she sat down. Her eyes stayed averted from mine, blonde hair covering half her face.
All three of us continued to wait in silence, Micah pulling out a book and reading; the girl next to me drawing on her arm; and me attempting to stack the coins on the floor under my seat. Eventually I got bored of the silence and turned towards the new girl, asking, "So, what's your name?"
"Oh." She looked surprised. "Um, my name is Ella. Ella Rose Thorne."
"Nice name." I stuck out my hand for a dap, but she returned it with a handshake. We dwindled into another awkward silence. An announcement was made soon after that the ceremony would be taking place in a mere five minutes. As we put our temporary entertainments away in preparation, for the graduation, the crystal clear entrance to the baroque hall blasted open revealing a mob of girls. Frigid air stormed in, as the doors were left open for longer than intended. Every student looked their way, except for Micah who was checking his headset. Ella shrank down into her seat.
They strutted forward, flashing pearly white and swishing their hair. It was a kaleidoscope of colors ranging from blonde sun to black midnight. As they approached, the group eventually got smaller and smaller, as the members fanned out to the individual seats spread everywhere. Eventually after what seemed like much more than forty seconds, the doors slammed closed, letting in one last gust of cold air. The last standing girl from the mob sashayed to the seat next to Ella, leaning over to her ear. I'm pretty sure the leading girl didn't mean for me to hear whatever she said, but she was pretty bad at keeping a low volume. She muttered, "Thanks for the blazer," before smiling maliciously. She leaned back into her chair, checking her nails.
Ella stifled a sob, and sunk lower than the sea level into her chair. Micah glanced over, alerted by the suppressed sob, before piecing together the situation. I was about to give the newcomer a piece of my mind, but before I could do anything brash, Micah held my wrist. As I looked back at him, fire smoldering in my eyes, I was surprised to see that he had reacted in a similar way. His eyes, contrasting to my burning rage, held a kind of cold anger. Even through the differences, I could tell the message he was trying to tell me. Not now. Reluctantly, I tamed the flames burning inside of me and waited for the long awaited graduation to start.
