SAMMANTHA
He was driving me home from our date, the car's heater was on full blast making us feel warm despite outside being absolutely freezing. It was late at night, probably around twelve, as we drove through my neighborhood, houses were adorned with beautiful lights, making the ride almost magical. Snow fell lightly on the car's windshield. They only stayed on the glass for a moment, before they were wiped away by the slow rhythmic slide of the wipers.
I looked at him for a moment, his dark, eyes were focused on the road ahead. His chocolate skin was softly illuminated by the lights around us. His strong hands were on the steering wheel, hands that held me many times before.
He caught me staring at him, "What?" he asked innocently.
I can almost picture where his dimples are in the dim light. I smile, remembering the beautiful date he'd planned for us.
He'd gotten us reservations at the most expensive restaurant in San Francisco tonight. It was our 2 year anniversary, needless to say, I was speechless when we pulled up at the place. He never failed to surprise me. He had ordered this chocolate cake that was absolutely delicious. However, when the cake arrived, he wrapped his arms around me. We ended up forgetting about the cake for the time being.
He was just so damn perfect.
From the dimples that formed when he smiled to the way he always knew exactly what I was thinking. We were only a few blocks away from my home but I didn't want to leave just yet. I continued to look at him, completely mesmerized by him.
And to think, he was all mine.
Throughout the two years we'd spent together, he had been nothing but the perfect gentleman. He was always there for me in every way possible. Even when I pushed him away, he always made an effort to make me smile. He caught me looking at him as if I was in a daze and slowed down.
He pulled over in an open parking spot and took off the cars lights. He cupped my cheek with one of his warm hands, with our faces were inches apart, I looked down at his lips and then back at his dark eyes before kissing him passionately. My hand reached for the buckle of my seatbelt and I unbuckled it but he placed his hands on top of mine.
He kissed me slowly before murmuring "Not yet..Mi amor"
"Stop doing that" I complained.
"Doing what?" He asked smiling slightly.
"Sais que tu aimais ça quand je parlais français?.."he asked.
"I thought you liked it when I spoke French?.."
He made me pull off my seatbelt without hesitation, he laughed at my reaction.
"Je vais vous montrer combien je l'aime!" I said childishly.
"I'll show you how much I like it!"
"Tes parents regardent" he warned.
"Your parents are watching"
I sigh, knowing my father was probably waiting for me to get home. He would probably be outside in the porch with his colorful robe on, awaiting my safe return home. We pulled up at my house and nothing but dark windows greeted us, there was not a light on as far as I could see.
"How are you so sure, it doesn't even look like they're awake." I tell him.
"Security cameras" he reminded me. "They're quite literally everywhere"
I sighed as he unbuckled his belt. Silently wishing that tonight could last forever, but it's like the old folks always used to say, "All good things must come to an end". He opened his door and walked around the front of the car, my door opened and I stepped outside into the cold winter night. I heard the door shut behind me while I walked to my front steps. I eyeballed the cameras that were cleverly hidden. We weren't allowed to discuss where they were located with anyone outside of the family. Andre of course was an exception. So naturally, he knew about the blind spot near the window in my front porch.
A blind spot.
One perfect flaw
That flaw was created by me, doing it was a breeze.
I should really take acting lessons.
When I "accidentally" tossed my frisbee on the roof, I insisted that it was an honest mistake. Wasting no time in retrieving my 'most prized possession' I allowed my upper thigh to make contact with the camera, twisting it ever so slightly, creating a small area where nobody would be able to see. It was small enough of a detail that nobody seemed to notice.
Strict parents made sneaky children after all.
I made eye contact with the camera before I slipped into the blind spot.
When he held me by the waist and our lips made contact, I knew that I was hooked. I smirked silently, knowing that whoever watching on the cameras wouldn't ever catch on to us.
PRESENT DAY
ANDRE
It didn't make sense to me. None of it. How out of the six of us, it had to be Sammantha. No, it should've been nobody. Nobody deserves a bullet to the stomach—especially if they were unarmed and not violent. She was petrified, her eyes immediately found mine as the men filed into the room, I was the one she trusted to protect her. I couldn't forget the sound either, the terrible explosion of metal connecting to flesh. I knew Samantha couldn't hurt them, they were fully armed men and she was a scared, black woman. A realization slowly creeps over me and no matter how much I try to subdue it, it keeps crawling back to the front of my mind.
And what comes along with the realization is anger and I can no longer walk around the Fort as if everything is okay, while nobody is caring about what happened.
"Excuse me, but I have to see Sammantha. Can I be taken to her please?" I ask Frank, trying to hide just how frustrated I was feeling. It wasnt long before he took me to the hospitalized area where she was being treated. Mack and Alana came along as well, however Alana couldn't contain herself and began sobbing quietly before excusing herself.
Mack looked sympathetically at me before speaking quietly "We'll catch the fùckers who did this"
I couldnt form words at the time, the sight of my best friend and lover in this condition broke something inside me. The doctors had to work around me because the moment Sammantha regained consciousness, I was at her side. She was awake already and the procedure wasnt even halfway done yet. One of the doctors mumbled something about cheap anaesthetics but Samantha's beautiful but fear filled eyes locked onto my own and so we stayed for countless hours, until she eventually began taking slower blinks and her grip started to loosen.
Alarmed at her sudden sign of unconsciousness, I brought it to the doctor's attention. They calmly told me that she was most likely just exhausted but I knew that my fears were justified considering how much blood she'd lost. They finished a long time later, however I never left her side, watching the stitches that littered her abdomen and arms with teary eyes.
I pressed her warm hand to my lips, silently vowing to find justice for her.
Whoever did this wasn't getting away.
