It was rather often Dawson looked at Kirat, and thought to himself, why was he so much braver than him?
It was embarrassing to say that he might have been a little jealous of the fellow great beast summoner. So much confidence, he was just so sure of himself.
But, the young earl was confused. He both saw Kirat as spoiled and a little careless, but why did he feel like he was actually kind of... attractive?
Dawson stared out across the sea. The waves were gentle at the moment, the sun just rising. He had woken up unintentionally early, and even though all he wanted to do was curl up in bed and sleep for three more hours, he couldn't. He didn't like being completely alone for a while.
At least, outside his cramped room, there was still the captain and crew members, along with a few more early risers.
An exasperated yawn suddenly drew his attention. Dawson knew immediately who it was.
"Morning." Kirat said drowsily. Dawson noted that it sounded kind of cute, but quickly erased his invisible note in his mind.
He merely nodded at the other boy in greeting.
"You're up pretty early. Surprised you aren't sick yet."
"Only threw up once, if that means something." Dawson smiled weakly, attempting to throw a joke into the thick morning atmosphere.
Kirat chuckled. "The others aren't handling it very well."
"If it weren't for Devin making gross jokes, I'd have a very weak stomach on this ship." Dawson's face twisted up in a cringe.
Kirat snorted. "Just what I expected from that bi-"
"Shut up." Dawson interrupted.
Kirat put his hands in the air in surrender.
"So," Dawson started out awkwardly, "why are you up so early?"
Kirat shrugged. "I went to bed pretty early."
"I saw."
The two were silent for a minute.
"You know, Dawson, you're kind of cute."
Dawson startled out of his tired state. "What?" His blue eyes were wide with shock.
"I said I wish I had better boots." Kirat responded.
Dawson blinked once before deciding not to question it. He may have misheard him.
But, when Kirat snaked an arm around his waist, he knew he hadn't misunderstood.
Dawson's face burned a deep crimson. Kirat just bore a sly grin.
"Kirat." Dawson said suddenly.
Kirat glanced over at him, still looking as confident as ever.
"Do you like this?"
"Like wh-?"
Before Kirat could finish his sentence, Dawson softly pressed his lips against the other boy's. Kirat jumped, but hesitantly wrapped his arms around Dawson's waist.
When the two finally pulled away, breathless, Kirat murmured a quick reply.
"Yeah," he said, "I do like that."
