"How long have you been out here?" A voice asked, their footsteps coming closer.
Rollan looked up at Conor, who soon sat down beside him. "Ten years." He responded, tossing a stick into the stream in front of them. It drifted along peacefully, out of sight.
Conor smiled, shaking his head. "I came to fetch you. Dinner's ready."
"Is it stew?" Rollan asked hopefully.
"No, not tonight." Conor replied, tossing a rock far away. The rock hit the water with a splash, before it turned back to it's natural flow.
"Then I vote staying here." Rollan glanced over at Conor, who looked at him in surprise.
"What happened to never knowing when your last hot meal will be?" Conor tilted his head in confusion, fiddling with a few pieces of grass and dandelions in his hands.
"You never really get a break from Greenhaven, you know? This is nice. I like this." Rollan patted the water, and then hurriedly wiped his hand on his pants.
Conor shrugged. "Greenhaven isn't that bad."
"You have a lot of patience, don't you?" Rollan snorted.
"I suppose so."
They were silent for a few moments. The only sound was the gentle stream and the swaying of the trees above. Birds chirped nearby. Babies, by the sound of it. Waiting for their mother to feed them.
"So how did you know I was here anyway?" Rollan questioned, breaking the silence.
"Lucky guess." Conor answered, rubbing his arm slowly. Rollan watched the other boy fiddle with the dandelions in his hands. He realized, just as Conor reached over and plopped it on his head, that it was a flower crown.
"When did you learn how to make these things?" Rollan took it off his head, staring at it in awe.
"Not long ago. Abeke taught me," Conor paused, "I think Dawson tried to teach me once, back in Trunswick."
Rollan put the crown back on his head. "Do I look good?" He grinned, posing dramatically.
"Wonderful. Exquisite." Conor laughed.
"Thank you, thank you." Rollan bowed, the flower crown slipping right off his head. He quickly grabbed it, putting it back on. "Can you teach me?"
"Teach you?"
"Did I stutter?"
Conor smiled. "Sure, just get some flowers."
Rollan jumped to his feet, looking around the ground for the prettiest flowers he could find.
"Hey, Rollan?" Conor said.
"Yeah?" Rollan called over his shoulder.
"I like this too."Suggested by aidanrocks43211
