Conor shoved open the door, the hinges squeaking in old age. The smell of thousands of old books filled his nose. It was quite pleasant, he thought.
The shelves were exactly how they'd been left since the last time he saw them. Not many people visited the Greenhaven library. Conor liked it that way, it was a quiet place where he could gather his thoughts.
He placed his hand on one of the shelves, trying to guess what books would be easier than others. He was still trying to learn to read more, but he'd improved a lot.
He grabbed an average sized green book, swiping the dust off of the bumpy green cover. The golden words were faded, but he could faintly make out, Ancient Heroes of Erdas.
A raspy cough caught him off guard, and Conor jumped, looking towards the source.
"Were you gonna, uh, read that?" Worthy's golden cat eyes at him from across the aisle. Several books were piled up next to them, which he had seemingly finished, as the Redcloak boy simply stared at him.
Conor paused. He shook his head. "No," he walked towards the shorter male, hovering the book by his face, "here."
Worthy swiftly snatched it, running his fingers along the cover before sniffling.
"Are you sick?" Conor asked suddenly.
"N-" Worthy couldn't finish his sentence before he was thrown into a flurry of coughs.
There was a short pause between them before he shrugged. "I guess."
Conor stood there for a moment, staring at the obviously tired Redcloak curled up in a ball in a corner with a book over his lap. Then, he hesitantly dropped down next to him, laying his head on the other boy's shoulder.
Worthy startled, blinking at him for a short period of time.
"Figured you might need some company." Conor smiled. It was warm and comforting, and Worthy eased up a little more.
Worthy nodded quickly, sniffling again before running his gaze along the page.
"Oh, and," Conor added, "can you read to me, Devin?"
"Read to you?" Worthy responded in surprise, looking down at Conor.
"Yes. If you don't mind."
"No, no, I don't." Worthy shook his head.
Conor wrapped his arms around Worthy's waist. A gentle, caring hug.
"In the early days of Erdas.."
