a·fraid
/əˈfrād/
adjective
worried that something undesirable will occur or be done.

Devin was afraid of the dark. It was mysterious, and scary, and dangerous, and- did something just move? He pulled the blankets up to his nose. He hated the dark. He wanted to light a candle, but he couldn't move!

The little boy shook beneath his blankets, gaze flicking over the room anxiously. What if something came out of the closet and ate him? What if someone was watching him right now?

Suddenly, he heard familiar footsteps in the hallway. He almost wanted to spring out of bed and run to her. "Mother?" He called out softly. The footsteps paused, then slowly approached his door. The tall wooden door creaked open, revealing his mother's tired face.

  "Yes?" She whispered back.

Devin sat up, drawing his knees to his chest. "I'm scared," he whined. Her eyes softened.

"Oh, muffin." She shook her head. "There's nothing to be afraid of. We're very safe here."

He frowned. "But what if there's monsters in my room?"

His mother's posture straightened as she cleared her throat. "I order all monsters in this room to leave my son alone so he may sleep!" She whisper-yelled. She then smiled at him. "No more monsters."

  Devin giggled.

  "Goodnight, Devin."

"Goodnight, Mother," he replied as he rolled back over.

"Why are you still awake?" Conor asked from the log he was sitting on.

"I don't know," Devin answered. Conor looked at him for another minute, then returned to staring out ahead of him.

"You're still afraid of the dark?" He asked gently. Devin stiffened.

"How did you know about that?" He asked sharply. That was his most embarrassing fear! A fourteen year old, afraid of the absence of light.

  Conor shrugged. "I know you."

Devin shifted awkwardly, not speaking for a moment. "Yeah," he finally forced out.

Conor smiled at him, a little playfully. "Don't worry, I'll protect you," he joked.

Devin snorted, rolling over. "Don't need your protection," he mumbled.

He heard Conor try to stifle a laugh. "Sure you don't."
