Sebastián

"Sweetie, it's time to get up!", My mom, Valentina, barges into my bedroom, nudging me awake.

I groan, rolling over on my back, waving her off. My eyes still closed, refusing to let sleep go.

"Oh Sebastián, can you believe it? Today's the day! YOUR 18TH BIRTHDAY!", Mom continues, basically yelling, her sheer excitement bouncing off the walls. She proceeds to draw all the curtains, allowing the morning sun to illuminate my room, despite my many protests.

I groan louder, shoving a pillow on my face. "Mom please, it's still bed time".

"It's 9am.", She dismisses, pulling the duvet off me, exposing me to the brisk morning. If I wasn't already half dead, I'd be freezing but nonetheless, I finally sit up, giving in to her demands. I know better than to prolong this any longer. Nothings going to get me out of this ridiculous, archaic tradition.

Nothing.

I'm trapped and I just have to accept that. And I swear I'm not some miserable ass who doesn't want to find his mate. Because I do, I truly do. I've been thinking about this day since I first found out about the existence of predestined mates. But as I grew up, I began to learn exactly what entails once I find my mate. The next stage of my life already set in stone, with no other choice but to start the process of officially taking the crown, becoming king with my other half by my side. And as great as that may sound to literally any other immortal bloke, I don't want it. At least not now, not so soon. Not before I've even lived passed the walls of this heavily guarded castle. I just want more time. But it doesn't seem to matter what I want. This ceremony will proceed whether I like it or not and when I find them, the little freedom I have left will cease to exist and the rest of my life will forever be tethered to serving the monarchy and it's people. My people—the entire vampire realm.

A knock at my door breaks me from these weighted thoughts, and mom rushes to open the door. She ushers Montague in as he wheels in a breakfast cart with a tray full of food. "I had Mary Beth prepare your favorite breakfast—waffles with a side of B positive, get it?", She chortles to herself, thanking Montague as he leaves.

I roll my eyes, sliding out of bed, "Thanks mom". I kiss her cheek, taking the cup of blood from the cart. I finish it quickly, wiping my mouth of its remains as I walk into my closet. I grab a white button up and charcoal slacks, deciding against wearing a tie. Today's going to be insufferable enough as it is.

"I'm gonna shower", I tell her, as she follows my every move with worry seeping from her eyes.

"Sebastián you really should be more excited..", Mom starts, intercepting my path to the ensuite, reaching for me. But is thankfully interrupted when Phoenix barges in.

"Hey, you guys ready? Dad and uncle Basil are waiting in the throne room", He sends me a pitiful look, already aware of how I'm truly feeling over this day.
