7. The Other Side of the Door

~~~
    After sitting in the hospital room for 45 minutes my mother walked in.
"Ready to go, kiddo?" she questioned in a semi-cheery voice. She was distracted by something.
    "Uh- yeah, let me change my clothes," I say back. I don't think she hears me as she types vigorously on the screen of her phone. She turns and walked out of the room as her phone begins to buzz, indicating an incoming call.
I sigh and get out of bed. A nurse came in about 15 minutes ago to take my IV out. I had a small, light blue bandage wrapped around where the needle had been. I grab the clothes my mom had brought to the hospital. A purple ivory Ella t-shirt and light blue jeans paired with white converse. Taylor definitely helped her. My mom could not put a little outfit like this together on her own.
    The full-length mirror in the bathroom catches my eye. Now just in my bra and underwear, I walk over to it. My chest is flat, only my ribs jut out from under my skin. My thighs are small, and leave a large gap in between them. My eyes are sunken in, and my cheekbones are too sharp for the rest of the features on my face. My short, straight brown and caramel hair is greasy and thin. I don't know how I feel about how I look anymore.
The rest of Sunday flew by. I tried to focus on my homework, but the texts notification on my phone were just too tempting.
Unknown number: What's wrong with you, Mills?
How am I supposed to respond to that? Who is texting me? Could it be Steve? It was basically impossible now that I was the topic of all gossip- according to Taylor, at least.
As I sat down on my bed, my cat crawled onto my lap. She's a cuddler.
"What am I gonna do, Mer?" I question her.
As if responding to my question, Meredith let out a soft "Meeeooowwww"
"Thanks, you're a real help," I say sarcastically. I softly stroke her back and turn my attention towards my phone again. At that very moment, it buzzed again.
"BZZ BZZ" It sounded in my hand.
My heart stopped.
Unknown number (UN): You gonna guess who I am yet? ;)
"What the heck" I mutter to no one in particular.
Me: Who is this?
UN: Guess ;)
I am not doing this.
I put my phone down, adjusted Meredith, and moved back over to my homework. Only getting to open my binder, when my phone began to ring.
"OH! Look what you made me do, look what you made me do..." My phone sang. I picked it up and looked at the caller ID: Taylor. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth.
"Hello?" I answer.
"AAAALLLLEEEEECCCCCIIIIIIAAAA" Taylor screamed, or sung I suppose, into the phone. "Whatcha doin' tonight?"
"Um, sleeping" I responded flatly. It was a school night, and I don't go out that much. I'm more of a homebody.
"No fun!" she whined, then waited for a beat. Her breathing slowed while the silence filled the line. "I'm coming over" She stated. It wasn't even a question.
