6. State of Shock
~~~
I, Alecia Elizabeth Mills, was the topic of all gossip at Evergreen High School. Why? I have no idea."Yes, you, Lec." Taylor was confused to my reaction. She was gorgeous, so she was always in the gossip and drama. Her long legs and perfectly angled face made her one of the most beautiful girls at EHS. Not to mention her hair and makeup where always on point.
Me on the other hand, well, not so much. I wore cute, fitted clothes and makeup, sure. But I don't have the extra, well, 'umh' that Taylor has.
"Wh-why?"
Maybe that's why Steve was staring at me.
"People saw you on Thursday with both Chase and Miles," Her blue eyes were searching through mine. "I still don't understand what happened there".
"Neither do I." I muttered under my breath, breaking eye contact with Taylor.
"Okay, well, we are gonna figure this out." She's already determined. Suddenly, the door opens for the third time in the past hour. Mom.
"I don't care what he, she, it said! We are getting the warrant!" My mom was on the phone with her work. All I know is she is some kind of Lawyer. "Here" she mouthed with her eyebrows raised. She handed me a large white foam cup.
"Thank you" I whispered back, not wanting to interrupt her phone call. She gave a small wave to Taylor and walked out of the room. I took a long drink of the ice-cold water to avoid getting back on the boy topic with Taylor.
"Look, from what your mom told me on the phone this morning, you will get out this afternoon. They already did all the tests and your fine, aside from the concussion. Back to school either tomorrow or Tuesday. when you are going to talk to Cha-"
"So how much homework do I have?" I interject. I didn't want to talk to any boy about any gossip.
"No fun!" Taylor whined.
"Do you know where my phone is?" I ask Taylor, slightly panicking. The last time I had it was at the rink two days ago.
"BEEP BEEP BEEP" The heart rate monitor began to beep louder and quicker.
"Hey, chill. I have it. You're mom had it and asked me to give it to you," Her words calmed me. The beeping slowed to the regular pace as Taylor reached into her bag to hand me my slim iPhone 8 with a blue, purple, and pink swirl/tie-dye case.
I click the home button a couple times, but it doesn't turn on. I glare at her and she shrugs. "You didn't think to charge it all?" I question her. I'm a little annoyed, but just happy she had it.
"Oh shut up, you have it don't you?" She rolls her eyes and laughs. Her giggles are contagious and I join her in laughing at absolutely nothing. What are good friends for?
Taylor hands me a chord that's already plugged into the wall to charge my phone. I nod a thank you. Her blue eyes seem to be truly happy, not a glint of sadness in them. Her life had always been glamorous. She knew how to handle people who didn't like her, and those that liked her too much. Always outgoing and hardworking, the teacher's favorite too. She was like a sister to me, so I was a little jealous of her. But that didn't stop me from being proud of her accomplishments.
"So, any boys your interested in, Tay-tor-tot" I tease. She hates the nickname and hates talking about her relationships. I don't blame her, she has had a rough time.
"Nope," She pops the 'p'. Her ice eyes have changed. Almost like she is hiding something.
"Lies. Who is it?" I state seriously, I can read her better than anyone.
"I just don't want a relationship with it being senior year. I won't see anyone after this year. Except for you, roomie!" She was right. College was coming quicker and quicker. We decided to room together back in August when we both said we wanted to go to the same college. I was skeptical until she reminded me we will be in a separate class. She was going in to be an English teacher, I was going into biology. I had no idea after that.
A loud buzz from my phone interrupted our conversation. Or, rather, Taylor's ramblings. It had charged to 12%, and I had 17 text messages. 13 from Taylor, 3 different texts from three different unknown numbers, and 1 from my mother.
"Did you think I would respond, really?" I rolled my eyes at Taylor.
"I sorta thought you would be awake today... I was texting you all day and hoping you would respond. They told me you would still probably be out, but I didn't want to think like that," A sadness came over Taylor.
"I'm awake now, and I'm fine," I tried to console her a little. It was obvious that she felt bad about what happened.
Doctor Chase walked back in with Steve. His green eyes still burning with curiosity. "Stephen has something he would like to tell you." Doctor Chase's voice was stern. He was still babying his son, which clearly bothered Steve.
Steve was silent for a minute, studying the room, Taylor, and me. "I'm sorry I barged in, feel better soon," He said robotically. His father obviously made him say exactly those words.
"It's fine," I try to sound casual, but it comes out more awkward.
He nods and his dad ushers him out the door. Taylor stares at me with huge eyes. I shrug at her as Doctor Chase turns toward me.
"Can you give us some privacy, please" The annoyance in Dr. Chase's voice remains, even after Steve left.
Taylor nods and drops my backpack next to my bed. I hadn't noticed she had it. Her shimmering blue eyes glanced up at me. "I'll see you tomorrow," she says as she walked out of the small room.
The fluorescent accent Dr. Chase's sharp cheekbones and greased back hair. "I'm concerned about your weight. Your labs are coming back fine, so I just want to meet back up with you in a month." He states sternly.
"Uh-ok." Not gonna happen...
"Anyways, when your mother gets off the phone, she will have to fill out some paperwork. You can go home after that,".
I nod, but Doctor Chase studies me for a moment, brow pulled together. The emotion wipes off his face, leaving me confused about what he was thinking about. He walks out of the room without saying another word.
"VRRT VRRT"
My phone buzzes again. It's a text from the unknown number.
Unknown Number: What's wrong with you, Mills?
