10. The Air Was Cold

~~~
My alarm blared in my ear at precisely 6:30 am. I usually don't wake up for another half hour, but Taylor and Drew were over and God only knows how long that would take for both of them.
Sitting up, I began to run my fingers through my hair and recount last night.
Steve.
The kiss.
The text from the unknown number.
Dear God.
"Taylor, get up. School." I say grogally.
"Mm-mm, no" Taylor wines back.
"Mmm, yes" I mock her.
"MMMmmmHHHmm" She whines as she sits up, stretching. I peel away the cover of my bed and head down the hall to wake up Drew.
"Drew?" I knock on the door.
No answer.
"Drew?" I knock harder.
"Yeah?" Drew says behind me.
I jump and try to bite back a scream. "Do not do that ever again!" I say sternly.
"You're like a kitten when you get upset," Drew retorts calmly. He has clearly already brushed his hair and changed into something suitable for school.
"Shut up... " I pause. "Where did you get those clothes? Were you planning on spending the night or something?"
"Nah, just had it in my car. Just in case, ya know?"
"Uh, sure" I stalk back towards my room to change into something presentable.
I end up picking a white short sleeve shirt, long pink cardigan and some high waisted shorts. It will be chilly this morning and in classes, but after school it will probably be very warm. I yank my pyjama pants down and remember how Steves' hands had rested in my hips just a few hours ago. As I pull on the rest of my close I find myself in front of the mirror vanity in my room. My fingers brush my lips as the memory replays over and over again.
What is he gonna do today? Did Cory notice? Did Abigail? Did Drew? Oh, God, of course, he did.
Anxiety begins to overtake my thoughts. If something is different today and other people say things and rumours spread, I'll... What? What will I actually do? What can I do? So many questions and so much uncertainty.
"Ready?" Taylor asks, breaking my thoughts.
"Uh, yeah, let me put some mascara on real quick" I give her a small smile and she nods. I quickly apply some natural makeup- concealer, foundation, blush, and mascara- and head to the bathroom to brush my hair and teeth.
By the time I find my way downstairs I hear Drew's voice. "I'm talking full-blown making out"
"No!" Taylor responds, shock evident in her voice.
"I'm serious! " Drew defends himself.
I feel the blood rush to my face. Drew told her about the kiss. I walk slowly towards the voices in the entryway. To the universes sick sense of humor, my phone buzzes in my back pocket. Shit.
"Lec?" Taylor walks toward the stairs where I was attempting to hide.
"Um- ye- yeah, let's go," I keep my eyes on the ground, yank my backpack from the floor. and almost run out to my car. I hear Drew and Taylor whisper something about talking later, but I choose to ignore it.
