Chapter Ten
"NᎾᎢ YᎾᏌ, FᎪᎢ ᏓᎬᏚᏌᏚ, ᏚᏞᏆᎠᎬ ᏆᎢ ᎾN ᏴᎪᏟK."Eugene slid the quarters into the payphone, leaning to even be able to reach. He was handcuffed to Kristoff's right wrist while Hiccup was handcuffed to Kristoff's other wrist, so his arms were crossed across his body. Eugene prayed that someone would answer the phone as a tour group walked by.
"After we take the mugshots, we bring them down here where they wait to be interviewed by the arresting officers." The cop explained to the kids who couldn't be much older than ten. Hiccup stared up at the wall as the kids awed. "Trust me, kids, you do not wanna be sitting on these benches. We call this place Loserville." He added as he led them away, laughing.
One kid stayed behind and whipped out his phone. He aimed at Kristoff's glaring face and took a picture, the shutter echoing. Angry, Kristoff kicked the phone out of the kid's hand. The kid glared back as he picked his phone off the ground.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Elsa. It's Eugene."
"Hey, Eugene. Where are you guys?" She asked. They were supposed to come back later in the afternoon. She hadn't heard anything from Jack yet, which was strange, but she played it off as guys being guys.
"We are at the spa in the hotel." Eugene said, trying to sound really enthusiastic.
"Cool. We're just getting some sun. Is Jack around?"
"Of course he's around. Why wouldn't he be around?" Eugene quickly answered, slightly worried. Maybe she had heard something or he had called her earlier in the day.
"I mean, I'm just wondering why you're calling me."
"Um. . ." Eugene trailed, trying to think of something to say. "We made a deal, no talking to girlfriends or wives. So we're all just calling each other's." He lied, plastering on a smile. He then scrunched up his face, glancing over his shoulder at Hiccup, who gave the same face back. The deal sounded disgustingly gross.
"Okay. What's up?" She lightly laughed. They were so sweet and funny.
"Uh, you are not gonna believe this. We got comped an extra night in the hotel."
"You did?"
"Yeah. The suite, it is ridiculous. It's out of control." Eugene replied, trying to sound really happy about the trip even though everything that could go wrong was going wrong. "There's, like, room service and a butler, it's-- I mean, it's just the works. So, we were thinking of spending the night here and then we're just come back totally relaxed in the morning."
"You wanna stay an extra night?" Elsa asked. "But the wedding's tomorrow."
"Yeah, that's why we're gonna get up real early, and we'll be back in plenty of time."
"Okay. Are you sure that's a good idea?" She asked, clearly hesitating. She didn't want Jack to miss the wedding. And she knew the guys were having fun, but it seemed too risky.
Before Eugene could answer her back, a police officer marched into the room. "Fitzherbert, Haddock, Bjorgman. Room 3."
"Okay, Els, I gotta go. We'll talk to you later." Eugene quickly said into the phone.
