*****
I suddenly got nervous at seeing Xero rolling and screaming on the ground. Everyone acted as if this was normal. I could feel my eye twitching and I started to make clicking noises with my tongue. Xero was scaring me.
Suddenly some doctors ran in and tried to stop him. They bent down next to the boy and held him down on his back. Xero squirmed in their grasp. "Stop it! I'm on fire and it won't go away! Stop it before I die!"
After he said that, I finally understood. He has a mental problem that makes him think he's on fire. I started to calm down, continuously telling myself that he's going to be fine. Xero continued squealing and yelling. Then it hit 12:10 and he suddenly stopped.
The doctors got off of him. Xero looked confused. He didn't seem to understand what was going on. A neurologist came out of her room and smiled at him. They bowed to each other. Then she took him into a room. Xero never took another glimpse in my direction.
I was called in a few moments after that. My neurologist was a female with red hair. Her roots were coming in and her brows were black, making her look unnatural. She's still really nice though. "So, how have your tics been this week, Hyein?" I looked at the ground and shrugged my shoulders. "Good I guess. I haven't had any really bad episodes." She nodded and wrote some things down. "Have you been taking your medication?" I couldn't make eye contact with her. "Now and then," I admitted.
My neurologist sighed. "Hyein, you know what happens when you don't take your medicine." I rolled my eyes. "There's a greater chance of me having an episode. I know and I don't care." She typed everything I said and basically stopped listening to me. Then she stopped. "Why don't you care?"
I inhaled and exhaled dramatically. "This is who I am. I just need to deal with it. Plus, the medication makes me fall asleep during class." She continued typing. "That's why you take it early in the morning and early at night." This lady makes me angry. "I'm not waking up at two in the morning to take drugs that turn me into a zombie." She was about to say more, but I stopped her. "I need to go. I'll see you next week, Pam." I stood up and left her office.
All my visits this past month have been like this. I've been trying to ween myself off the medicine because school was starting, but it's difficult. My tics are just too hard to control. Most of all, they're annoying. I can't find any positives in this situation.
I walk out of the office and run into somebody. Then I trip over their shoe. My face starts to fall forward, but I'm caught and saved from getting smacked by the floor.
I stand up and clean myself off. "Are you okay, Hyein?" I look up and realize that it was Xero standing in front of me. I nod my head. "I'm perfect. Just great." Twitch. Right on cue, thank you. He smiles and looks me in the eyes. "Good, I was afraid I would have to drag you to the emergency room." It was ironic how he was saying that, considering what he'd just been through. I smiled and held two thumbs up. "Life is great." Twitch, click. I hate this.
Xero suddenly grabbed one of my thumbs. "Come get a drink with me." I hesitated to go with him, but he was already pulling me, so I just went with it. I also let him hold onto my thumb. I'm not much of a protestor with this stuff.
He opened the passenger door for me and I got in willingly. He got into the drivers side of the car and we drove off.
I just met him that morning of course, but I didn't care at that point. I was fed up with my neurologist and my Tourette's. I needed a few moments.
The car was quiet for a while, but then he turned some music on. I didn't think it was awkward, though, the silence. It was calming and comfortable.
Xero's car smelled absolutely delicious. It really calmed me down. I guess I needed that.
Then Xero stopped in front of a building. "Is a bar okay? My friend works here, so it'll be easier to get our drinks." I shrugged my shoulders. At this point, I don't care.
He opened the door for me and helped me out, like a gentleman. Then he opened the door to the bar for me and held it, waiting for me to pass. I thanked him and was surprised.
I looked around. It was a small bar, nice too. A peaceful bar, is that an oxymoron?
Xero led me over to the bar and helped me get on the bar stool since it was too high for me. He banged his fist twice on the bar and someone came walked out of the back doors.
It was a happy guy with bleach blonde, curly hair. He smiled at the sight of Xero. "Hey, Xero! Whatcha want?" he asked. Xero looked to me. I twitched and he turned back. "Just two cokes, Joo-Joo." I giggled when Xero said Joo-Joo. It was obviously a nickname, but it was a really weird one for a grown man.
Xero looked at me. "What's so funny?" He asked with a serious face. I raised a brow at him. "Joo-Joo?" I asked. Xero nodded. "That's Byung Joo's nickname. Of course others calm him B-Joo and he prefers that, but he's at work right now. If I call him Joo-Joo, he can't get pissed." I nodded my head, thinking about it.
"Faster Joo-Joo!" I shouted. Xero snorted beside me.
A few seconds later, out came Byung Joo with our cokes. Byung Joo looked at me and narrowed his eyes. Twitch. I waved hi to him, hoping he didn't think I was winking at him.
"Who's this girl, Xero." Byung Joo looked disgusted by me. I looked at my drink and took a sip. "This is Park Hyein, from dance class." Xero introduced me in a sort of happy way, which made me feel a little more comfortable.
I shook hands with Byung Joo and then the blondie walked off.
Xero turned to me after a while. "So, about what happened at the neurologist," he stopped talking and waited for me. I turned to him and nodded. "Yeah, uh, I've never seen that one before. You think you're on fire. That's a bit strange," I said, just speaking my mind.
Xero looked at his drink and scratched his neck. "Other people don't usually see that," he tried to laugh it off, but I saw his obvious embarrassment. "Want to tell me about it?" I said in between sips of coke.
He looked up at me with puppy eyes. Then shrugged his shoulders. "It was just a thing that happened when I was little."
I pushed my drink away from me. "Why did you bring me here if you weren't going to talk about it?" Xero's shoulders dropped. "I thought if I took you out for a drink, you wouldn't mention it to anybody."
I pulled my drink back and took a sip. "So you want me to swear to secrecy?" he nodded his head. I shrugged my shoulders. "It's none of my business what kind of problems you got." Xero looked shocked for a few seconds, then shook it off. "That's cool."
When I finished my drink and he paid, I said to him, "Now take me home." He raised a brow at me. "Maybe I should leave you with Joo-Joo, attitude." I opened my eyes wider and fluttered them. "Please?" Twitch, click. Damn it. He giggled. "Let's go twitchy." I followed him out of the car and he took me home.
