I yawned, munching on the cakes the maid had brought us since that's all Philip asked for every time. I watched the blonde come in carrying a large pile of files and books and dropped them on the ground in front of Fallon, collapsing back in his chair as Dorothea and Fallon continued to talk about the Yakov party and their movements.
Still wasn't really good at this detective stuff.
"Hey, Philip, go bring me the investigation file we borrowed yesterday."
"What?!" Philip cried in response as he stood with a fist in the air and an angry look down at the sitting Fallon, "Come on!-"
"How about I go get it?" Yuliy sighed, catching all of our attention as he shut the file he was looking at and walked off towards the file room.
"He's being a little more gung-ho than usual."
"Maybe he's finally feeling better." Philip shrugged.
The door handle twisted and I stiffened, turning as Ryoko entered with a polite call.
"My father, he would like to invite everyone to dinner tonight." She began.
Philip groaned, "I bet it's gonna be all formal and stuff."
"You only don't like the idea cause you can't use chopsticks, can you?" I began.
"What?! No! Shut up!"
I snickered as Fallon crossed his arms, "No one ever taught you table manners, did they?"
"I know my table manners!" Philip yelled again and I giggled a little louder, shutting him up as his cheeks flushed with a light pink.
"You can tell your father that'd we'd all be more than happy to join you for dinner." Dorothea finally said.
"Wonderful. This evening, we'll be having-" Ryoko suddenly gasped as Yuliy walked in the room, her thought process seemed to come to a crashing halt and I blinked, bored.
"Is something wrong, Ryoko?" Philip asked as I turned away towards the window.
"Oh! It's nothing! Well, I look forward to seeing you all tonight."
The door shut behind her and Dorothea chuckled, "Did you see that?"
"I sure did." Philip replied smugly.
"Huh?! See what?"
I rolled my eyes and turned my gaze from the window to Yuliy as he approached me,
"You look frustrated."
"You know Ryoko likes you, right?" I whispered.
"I know... I already told her to stay away from me."
I frowned slightly, "It sucks, because I actually think she'd be a good fit for you but, she'll get herself hurt."
"I couldn't agree more, and I'm glad you understand." Yuliy began, his voice held a depressed tone but he pushed it away, "But aside from Ryoko and I... I know there's something else. What about you and Philip? It's no secret that you like him the way Ryoko might like me."
My eyes widened, "Wha- I mean, I don't really know..."
He chuckled, placing a hand on my shoulder he leaned into my ear, "It's clear he likes you too, just look at they way he reacts to things around you."
"Yuliy?! What are you doing?!" Philip jumped up from his chair and shoved Yuliy away from me, "Don't you know anything about personal space?!"
"Philip - it's fine!" I quickly said, not really liking the way he yelled at the innocent boy.
I glanced up to Yuliy as he smiled lightly, winking at me my eyes widened.
Philip's jealous... that's why he doesn't like me being around Yuliy.
"Did you just wink?! What was that?! Hey!"-
Philip struggled, and I smiled as I watched the fish fall from his chopsticks for the third time.
"Awe, you almost got it this time!" Fallon grinned.
I set my bowl and chopsticks down before turning to Philip to help him, carefully touching his hand and helping him steady himself.
"It's like this - keep your finger here, and hold firmly."
"Like this?"
"Yeah." I nodded, and leaned back as I watched the male finally manage to get a bite of food.
"Man, am I glad your Japanese." He mumbled and I smiled, watching him eat from the corner of my eye and completely missing the rest of conversation going on at the table.
I snapped myself out of it and turned back to my rice, shoving some in my mouth and trying to think of something - anything other than Philip.
"Who exactly is going on these errands?" Ryoko suddenly asked.
Oh. She must mean about the Gotemba Shizuoka mission that Yuliy and Dorothea are going on together.
"I am." Yuliy answered her, and I glanced at him to see he didn't even look up at her from his dinner.
"What's wrong Ryoko?"
"Nothing." The girl stuttered in reply.
"You've got nothing to worry about! I'll take good care of Yuliy." Dorothea grinned, throwing an arm around the poor boy, "I won't leave his side."
"Exactly! Yuliy'll be perfectly fine. I mean, just look at the guy!" Philip dramatically pointed to Yuliy as he ate as if nothing was going on.The sun was setting and I did my best to hold back my tears - I was just a twelve year old girl only beginning to see the real world outside of training, outside of Japan and V Shipping.
"Loving someone outside of the organization is almost impossible. I'm sorry, Ariel, but your little crush associating with you will only get him killed. And you too, what happens if you make a stupid decision and you both get yourselves killed?!"
And I had nothing to say to that.It should be clear to everyone that fact; what my mother said is true. We live in a different world from people like Ryoko, and just like my mother scolded me that night, we can't let those people get close to us.
I've had only a few, a few of those silly crushes on boys when on a mission.
I've only told one, who ran away from me in utter fear and disgust, calling me a freak.
"You okay, Ariel?" Philip asked.
"Yeah, I'm alright, just a little tired I suppose."
"Huh, whatever you say."-
Mission plans change quick, as always, and soon I was stuck in the back of a car with Philip, Fallon driving and Willard silent in the passenger seat.
"Really, are you doing okay?" Philip poked at me again and I frowned, wishing I could control how my emotions were shown better - like Yuliy.
"You trying to set Yuliy up with Ryoko, it's annoying." I mumbled.
"Seriously?" His tone changed quick, "You're just jealous aren't you? You know, I don't know why you like that dog in the first place, he's such a-"
"Yuliy understands me, unlike you!" I snapped.
"What! Hey! Back off, as if he really cares about you! Yuliy only cares about himself!"
"Oh?! And you do care about me?!"
"Yes!"
I stiffened, leaning back slightly from our fight as Philip's face lit up in red, Fallon bursting out in laughter, "Come on you two! Calm down, there's no need to fight!"
I turned away from Philip as he yelled at Fallon.
"I'm not jealous of Ryoko." I began, silencing them, "I just think it's pointless and stupid. Ryoko never has a chance, and Yuliy isn't an idiot - he would never allow Ryoko to get close to him."
"And why not?" Philip asked.
"Because she'd end up getting hurt, or... even he might. It's inevitable, she doesn't belong with people like us."-
Arriving at the stray train clearly taken over by vampires, there was no conductor and a dead end up ahead. Since Philip recognized Dorothea on the train she wasn't even supposed to be on, meaning Yuliy was somewhere on here as well, Philip, Fallon and I jumped the car onto the train as Willard took up the steering wheel.
Fallon detached the train cars and I stood close to Philip, sword in hand and hoping for the best.
"Ryoko?!" I gasped, watching her leap from the separated cars, just barely saved by Dorothea and Philip.
"What are you guys doing here?! This is so reckless!"
"You're the reckless one." Philip retorted.
"No kidding, are you insane?! You could die here, you fool!" I hissed, "Don't you know your place?!"
"Don't you know your place?!"
I stiffened at my own words, and quickly backed off from the girl to what was now ahead of us as I realized I was speaking like my mother would.
"This meeting must be fate! Please let me help someh-"
I yanked the girl closer to the corner as gunshots whizzed past her head, the others loading their firearms and turning back to the much more important fight.
"Oh, you're the intruder from the other day." Dorothea began, and I walked out to see that asshole journalist dude with a few military men.
"What the hell?"
"What, friend of yours?" Philip asked.
"He's a newspaper man who's snooping around about us."
"An asshole at that." I added.
"If he's a newspaper man, what's with the gun?" Fallon asked.
"For protection of course. You can never be too-"
"Watch out!"
I quickly grabbed the handle of my sword, but Ryoko beat me too the action and sliced the vampire almost right in half. I relaxed slightly, shooting a glare at Philip as he whistled to her.
He's never whistled at my skill... I thought, pouting slightly.
I gasped and stumbled, an explosion shook the train right off the tracks and I couldn't remain on my feet no matter how hard I tried, Philip falling practically right on top of me.
I grunted, yelling out lightly in slight fear as the violent shaking continued, and I found myself gripping onto Philips jacket as he barley held himself off of me.
When it finally stopped, I breathed heavily, hesitant to move.
"Ariel! Are you alright?!" Philip quickly asked, sitting up and off of me.
"I-I'm fine. Thank you, Philip."
He sighed in relief, "Thank goodness. And I... I'm sorry about earlier. I get it, it's a dangerous business here."
My eyes widened, and I once again found myself lost for words in the boys presence.
"Is everyone okay?!" He quickly called out, turning away from me, "And where's Yuliy?!"
This time, this time my mother won't yell at me for falling for someone I shouldn't. Philip is perfect, and either way, it wouldn't matter if my mother didn't approve of the English man anyways. I'm done letting her control me.
"Come on Ariel, lets get outta here!"
"Right!"
