Even though Willard was gone, we still had to keep moving forward. It would be pathetic of us to just lose all of our confidence just because Willard wasn't here to tell us the best course of action. Dorothea took the lead pretty quickly, and with all of our help, we managed to get some good research in throughout the night and stop worrying about our current position and where Willard might be.
"I've made a decision to move our group to a place where we would have an extreme advantage if anymore vampires show up. It's possible that they could be building an army, I've read about it being done before." Dorothea explained, sorting some papers around as I let my head fall on Philip's shoulder, "The days in Longyearbyen, Norway are far longer than the nights. If we can lead them and their vampire army there, we can bring them down to their knees."
We had stayed up all night with little to no sleep. Of course, Dorothea didn't bother to wake us up if we did end up passing out for a little bit, but even still, it was hardly enough to feel energized. And now, she was talking about going to a place where the sun never sets? How am I going to fall asleep if it's bright out?
"Ariel? Hey! If I don't get to sleep than neither do you!"
"I'm so tired..."
"Alright everyone!" Fallon bellowed, waking all of us up again, "As for the killin' humans issue, I've got us covered."
I blinked as he held up a huge case as if it was his pride, "High dose tranquilizers. One hit and their out."
"Nice." Philip and I muttered, which didn't seem to be enthusiastic enough for him.
"Come on! I looked all over the place for a good store at this hour!" He groaned, "You should be praising me."
"As if!" Philip scoffed, "The only time I'll ever praise you is in your dreams!"

After Dorothea rolled her eyes and allowed us to take a two hour nap, we were suiting up and making our final preparations for the journey ahead. It would be an extremely long treck across Europe to get to iceland, but this is all we had right now, and we had to focus.
"Why do you think Willard left?" I asked as I got comfortable in Fallon's car, Philip climbing in beside me. His surprise leaving was a lot like Yuliy's was back then.
"Who knows? The guys always thinking and never communicating." Philip shrugged, letting out a long and tired sigh as he leaned his head back and shut his eyes, "If you think about it, he's a lot like Yuliy... or is it that Yuliy's just like him?"

Two weeks since our departure, we fell into a small predicament when we miscalculated our dates and our spare change and ended up with no safe place to sleep.
"Guess we'll have to camp out!" Fallon had burst out laughing as if this was totally cool or something.
And honestly, he was probably enjoying this more than he should. Fallon was more of an outdoor man than any of us would ever be, considering he was the only one who wasn't born and raised in the city.  He led us out to the forest to find a good place to rest, and claimed he would take the first shift of patrol. Dorothea was extremely reluctant, even though we've slept in dirty old homes all on the same floor before, it seems the thought of having to set her things on the actual earth was what really set her off.
"Don't worry," Fallon tried to comfort us as he watched us scowl at the ground, "It's only for tonight and we'll be headed out to Iceland before you know it!"
"Thanks, Fallon." Dorothea sighed, rolling her eyes and complaining about wanting a bath.
"You're welcome!"

Even though it was the middle of the night, the sky was so fogged over that it seemed like there was still a sun behind it somewhere. Or maybe, the moon had moved much closer to the earth and it's reflected light became more powerful. I was staring at it for some reason, the emptiness of it.
I stood alone with my swords dripping blood on a large plane of stone ground, cracks roamed the area and I felt the need to be careful where I stepped. There were puddles of frozen water scattered, and the reflection of the dead screamed.
"If the arc is so powerful, why can't it be used to save us?"

"Ariel! Wake up!"
My body jolted and my eyes shot open to my reality. The sky wasn't covered and I could see the stars perfectly. Even still, my heart hardly had time to slow down, because the stars weren't the only thing I could see.
"Mom?!"
She was the same as I remembered, even after all this time it's like she hadn't aged at all, "Get up, and get your friends, now!"
"But- what's going on? Why are you here?!" I asked, sitting up and shaking Philip awake,
"Hello?" He grumbled, blinking to try and wake himself up.
"Get up! All of you! Xavier is leading a hoard of vampires towards you. Haven't you thought about how they were tracking you?! Don't you think?! I know I raised you better!"
"What the hell is this? Who are you?" Dorothea hissed, and I quickly turned to see her grabbing a weapon as she stood up. Fallon quickly came to her side, bags already on his back, shaking his head.
"I am Ariel's mother. I knew my daughter was fallowing you fools into hell, but I didn't realize all of you were so stupid as to let yourselves be tracked!"
"We're being tracked?! How?" Philip gasped, finally waking up properly and glaring at the woman who glared right back at him.
"This." My mother held up a pack of ashes, and I recognized it instantly. An ancient technique used by the first groups of jaegers, spreading ashes over peoples clothes, something that vampires could smell from miles away. It was usually used as bait.
My mother was right, and for the first time in a long time a wave of dread and guilt flew over me. How could we not have realized? How could I be so naïve when we're in such a dangerous position right now. Did I really let my guard down just because I had gotten so comfortable - or because I was relying to much on everyone else?
My mother scoffed, turning to look out towards the east, where I assume the vampires and Xavier would be coming from. She was so much smarter and faster than I was, and no matter how hard I tried, I probably would never be able to be good enough.
"Pack your things and go." She ordered.
I stood and Philip quickly followed, running past me to help Dorothea, "But, if they're coming here, mother-"
"I said go! Listen to me for once in your life!"
I pursed my lips, taking a moment to just stare at her back. I wondered if I should get angry or just thank her and get over myself, but I couldn't seem to do either. I decided to just keep my mouth shut, just like I always have, and when I turned to follow behind the others, I finally felt a bit more like myself again. I had to strive to do better, to be stronger, because I can't be beaten like this again.
Next time Xavier tries to come after us, next time he tries to make us look like fools, I'm going to finish him for good.
