Much to my dismay, we did have to stop every once and a while. Fallon and Willard were the only ones who could drive, and even with their altering driving sessions we still could only get so far before we had to give the vehicle a break too.
I sat still looking at the same page of the same file for as long as I could, pretending to be trying to focus. Philip was passed out on my lap and I wished I could pass out too, but Dorothea was talking in a scolding tone about how lazy Philip was and I didn't want to be the subject of her scolding next.
"Everyone up! Lets go!" Willard's voice was loud and it made all of us jump, Philip smashed his head into my elbow that was held close above him to hold the file up, and he whined as I quickly apologized.
"What's going on, Professor?" Dorothea asked, standing up and walking towards him.
"There was another vampire attack. Another brooch found in the ashes - but it's not damaged. I recognized it." He huffed, shoving his guns in the trunk of the car while Fallon started the engine, "If my intel and gut instinct is correct, then the people we're looking for are looking for us right now too. Just in case any vampire got away without us knowing, we need to be on the move before more show up."
I turned my head slowly to look at Philip, who looked much more awake now, and he caught my eyes and held the stare. He smiled lightly, a half smile that lasted a second, until Dorothea whacked him with the back of a file and told us to get in the car.
"Why are you so mean?!" Philip cried in question as I got up, piling the files in one hand before turning back to the pouting boy.
"Come on, Phil. You can go back to sleep in the car."
He frowned, but took my outstretched hand anyways, letting it help him up, "Thanks for offering your shoulder as a pillow, love."
I rolled my eyes, "Just means you owe me."
He rolled his eyes in reply, "You know I hate it when you say that."
"Yes but, you know I kind of think you're cute when you're agitated."
"Get in the car already you love sick hooligans!"
"Yes ma'am!"-
We loaded the car onto a ferry and had a moment to settle down as it moved across the waters. It was luckily a warm day, so I didn't mind sitting outside and watching the water move beneath us. Dorothea and the others had disappeared somewhere, but I decided not to mind it. I couldn't hear Philip's violin playing from any where, so I knew he was probably getting dragged into something, like trying a food Dorothea had never seen before. She certainly is an odd one, slapping us and scolding us one second and then acting like we were best friends the next.
Eventually, I heard footsteps approaching me and I turned my gaze from the ocean to the boy who stopped for a moment in front of me.
"Mind if I sit?" Philip asked, shoving his hands in his pockets.
I shrugged, "I wouldn't mind at all."
He sat down without another word, letting his leg press against mine and leaning forward to look out to where my eyes traveled, "Anything on your mind?" He asked.
"I'm just trying to focus on the water. It'd do me no good to over think things."
"But you're still worried. I can feel it." He slipped his hand over mine, and I looked down as our fingers interlocked and we gave each other a squeeze.
"I feel like I'm always worried. It just got worse now."
He chuckled, "You can say that again." A long, silent breath left him and he leaned his head back on the bench, closing his eyes, "You know... you're hairs growing out."
"Yeah, you're right. Should I cut it?" I asked, grabbing onto the ends of a few strands and rubbing it in between my fingers.
I looked at Philip as he popped an eye open, but he didn't really look at my hair. He looked at my eyes, and took a quick glance to my lips, a glance you could never miss.
"Maybe... another day..." He trailed off, whispering as he leaned his head forward and I met him in the movement, kissing him gently.
I giggled as we pulled apart and he moved quickly to kiss me again, "You're beautiful, no matter how long your hair is."
"Thank you, my love."We still had to take a train to get to London, but Philip's eyes shined a little brighter and his aura was almost instantly relaxed being in the place he knew better than any other. We scraped the bottom of our wallets for money to pay for the tickets, and then managed to find a good place to sit near by each other on the busy train.
I was lucky enough to play with Philip's hair in that moment as the train started moving, it was just two seconds of being able to run my fingers through his smooth locks before he grabbed my wrists and kissed my knuckles, telling me 'later' in a sweet voice. He was always so rude to any one else when they touched his hair, yelling, claiming it was his 'best feature' and he couldn't have it look bad. He still thought those things, he still liked his hair to be perfect, but the way he told me that made my heart melt for him.
"Tickets, please."
I blushed, turning from a smirking Philip to the conductor, "Right, sorry.""Dorothea! Professor! It's so good to see you!"
That voice was painfully familiar. I frowned, waking up from being so, so close to sleep just so I could look and make sure it was her and I wasn't hallucinating.
It was her, in all her dressed up glory. She wore makeup just a shade lighter than her already pale skin tone and she smiled when she talked, standing with her back perfectly straight and her hands placed seemingly 'correctly'.
Dorothea and the professor switched to Japanese instantly without a problem, and I grumbled under my breath,
"How the hell does she always find us?"
"Come on, Ariel." Philip mumbled back, nudging me lightly, "She's just super out going."
I refrained from scoffing, moving my eyes to her and Dorothea again.
"My father and I went on a vacation trip to go around Britain. We're headed to London last, actually. It's so lovely that I got to meet you here!"
"Yes, it certainly is." Dorothea replied with a perfectly fake smile.
"So... are you guys on another mission?" Her voice lowered, and I clenched my fists.
"I would do anything to have the life she has, and she's out here like she's trying to run into danger - like it's fun!" I hissed.
"Ariel..."
"Don't do that when you used to hate Yuliy. You hardly even had a reason to."
"Wh-H-hey!" He pouted, "Fine. I guess you're right anyways. She'd be crazy to leave her life for this."
I took a breath, "Thanks for understanding." I sighed, leaning on his shoulder.
"Anything for you."
