I stood frozen at the door to Yuliy's room. It was early in the morning and the sun was still making its way to the top of the sky, but Yuliy's room was empty, void of any piece of him like he was never here at all.
I blinked, wondering if I had got the wrong room for a second, but I wasn't an idiot. I had come to his room before to get him for a few things and I was fully awake, so I know I wouldn't mistake it.
Yuliy's gone. I told myself, the fact of the matter settling in.
My plans to ask him to train together and hopefully learn some new tips and tricks were cancelled indirectly and I couldn't help but feel
upset by it. How dare he leave without a word? What was he even trying to do?
I turned and ran down the hall towards the next person I thought of, knocking on the door loudly to Philip's room that was just down the hall.
"Ariel? What's going on?" The boy was still in his PJ's, a loose T-shirt and boxer shorts, and I swallowed back the urge to stare and focus on the issue at hand.
"Yuliy's gone!"
He blinked, confused as he yawned, "What are you talking about? Are you sure he's not just in the garden?"
I shook my head, "I walked by the garden on my way here, and I checked Yuliy's room! It's like he was never here!" I exclaimed, sighing heavily as I put my hands together, " I know you don't like me giving Yuliy so much attention, but I can't help it. I look up to him so much and I wanted to learn so much more- and he just left. We have to do something, Philip!"
"WAIT YULIY'S REALLY GONE?!"
"YES!" I groaned loudly, listening with a sigh as he told me to wait while he got dressed before we went to confront Willard about it.In the book lounge, Philip was furious.
"So what you're saying here is that Yuliy went off to South Sakhalin to search out this arc of Sirius thing - and he went alone?!"
"Sounds quite like it." Willard replies bluntly.
"He acted impulsively, as usual." Dorothea sighed with a small smile as she finished packing one of the last of our cases.
I stood still by the window, waiting for the crows to fly by and see if they could foreshadow our fate silently.
"But he just left us behind without saying anything!"
"Calm down blondie-"
"Hey! Get your paws off my locks!"
Fallon ignored Philip's outburst, "I never thought Yuliy to be the type to run after some weird myth."
"He doesn't care what's inside it. He feels lost, and if finding the arc gives him a sense of purpose, then so be it."
So he can just leave us behind without a word? What about us? About me? We just weren't good enough for him?
"So he remembers his purpose but forgets his friends?" Philip fires back.
"Professor," Dorothea sighed, "Are you really sure it's wise to leave him alone?"
"He can handle himself, but it's always dangerous to head off alone." Fallon added, agreeing.
I could feel Philip's gaze on my back.
The sky was clear.
"So we're gonna do whatever they say?" Philip began with a daring tone, referring to headquarters.
"Now Philip-"
"Really though, returning to headquarters is more important than Yuliy, is that it?"
"Yes that's right." Willard replied, and I clenched my teeth, feeling as helpless as I always did with my mother around.
"This isn't right!" Philip yelled, standing up from his chair so fast it fell over.
"However." Willard continued before Philip could keep on screaming, "We need to go somewhere before that. We'll do everything that's in our power to help him."
I slowly turned from the window, my eyes wide with shock, and Willard gave me a small smile.-
We were going to do everything we could to help Yuliy, but first we had to take a boat ride to get to Dogville, on which we couldn't do much of anything. So like usual, Philip pulled out his violin and sat on the edge of the chair I was laying in, staring up at the clouds moving.
Philip provided a gentle, solemn sound in the background as I hugged my journal to my chest.
I had far more pictures of Philip than Yuliy, and I kind of regretted it. What if I never saw Yuliy again? The one person who seemed to understand me the most, who was always there to snap me out of a bad train of thought.
I sighed, turning my gaze from the sky the the back of Philips head. Maybe I just get too attached to people too easily, Yuliy probably won't miss me at all.The boat ride wasn't a long one, but it was long enough for Dorothea to set Philip and I up. I stood in a small sun dress with my jacket over top, still just under an hour away from shore, and Philip approached me from behind.
He was silent for a moment, before he took in a deep breath, "It doesn't look like your so fond of Dorothea's plan."
"Her plan to dress me up? No, not really. She wanted me to stop thinking so much, I get it. But it's not something I can really control right now."
He hummed in understanding, putting his hands behind his head as the wind blew past us, "It's hard for me to stop thinking about it too. But I guess it's kind of nice, to dress up and pretend like we're just regular civilians."
I nodded, the hint of a smile breaking its way onto my face, "I can't deny that."
"Ariel-"
"Philip, what if we can't help Yuliy? What if... what if something goes wrong and we never see him again? I don't want to lose him... I don't want to loose anyone." I exclaimed, my thoughts pouring out of me, "I want things to go back to the way they were when I first got here. And I know it's selfish but-"
"It's not selfish at all. I feel the same way, Ariel. We all do! I'm scared too, but we can't give up before we even start the battle. We have to have a little faith in Yuliy, and in ourselves."
I stood lost for words, searching the blondes eyes as he searched mine. He stood with his words confidently, and I swallowed in a painful attempt to keep back my tears so I didn't look like a pathetic little girl.
"It's going to be okay, Ariel. I promise."
I took a deep breath at his words, letting it out slowly before I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his waist, "I'm trusting you on that, Philip."
He placed his hands lightly on my back in reply. I knew, somehow, that he had one of his beautiful smiles dawning on his lips.
