Snowstorm

The wind had been blowing so intensly in the last two days and the snow flew around, making the visibilty almost inexistant, throughout the whole village of Berk and its surroundings. Even the dragons stayed inside and no rider had been up in the sky.

It was now Hiccup's second big storm to manage as chief. He had to make sure the food supplies were full, because no trading ships would come and he had come to help with a ceiling collapse, from the snow's weight,  on the opposite side of the village. He had been running around the village, his boot constantly wet from the snow, and had barely set eyes on Astrid the whole time. The other dragon riders had helped for most of it, but the storm being as persistant kept them quite busy. Being the chief was exhausting. Hiccup could not help but think of his father, for whom it always seemed so easy to lead.

On the second night of the constant blizzard, Hiccup reached his hut during the middle of the night. He found the warmth of his home comforting, and changed his wet clothes quickly, too tired that he only could think of his bed. Toothless was lying in a corner of the room, asleep.

"Night bud," Hiccup whispered before turning into his bed. He was sound asleep in a matter of seconds.

The next morning the snow had finally stopped falling and the sun shined through Berk, reflecting on the bright layer of snow that covered every inch of the village. The kids were already out, building snow forts or having snowball fights. Astrid had been up quite early and taken Stormfly on a morning ride and found Ruff and Tuff on their way to Thor knows where, probably to do something stupid. When she landed, she found Fishlegs, out walking, Meatlug by his side.

"Hey Astrid! Have you seen Hiccup?" he asked. "We got a message that the trading boats are on their way," Fishlegs asked.

"No, I haven't seen him. He should be up by now. He's probably tinkering with some new invention of his.  I'll go check," she replied as Fishlegs handed her the parchment.

She went on her way, passing by the busy great hall and Snotlout calling around for Hookfang. She finally got to the forge and looked around, but saw no sign of the chief. Gobber appeared behind her.

"Astrid! What'cha doing here?" he asked as she jumped. "Sorry, did not mean to scare ya, lass,"

"It's fine Gobber. I was just looking for Hiccup, thought he might be here. Have you seen him?" Astrid asked.

"Nope, sorry. Haven't seen him at all this morning. Maybe he's still in his hut? He's been running around for the last two days, so maybe he caught one more hour of sleep?"

"That's not like him," she replied. "Thanks anyway, Gobber!"

"If you do find him, could you tell him I've got something to ask him?"

"I will," she said as she crossed the door. She signaled to Stormfly, who had been waiting around outside, to Hiccup's hut.

When she reached the house, she noticed the lack of sound coming from his hut. He usually was always fixing or creating something, making such loud noises, but this morning; nothing. A bit of worry creeped into her. She opened the door, knowing he would not make a fuss about her coming in uninvited, and stepped inside. The whole hut was still in darkness, as if the sun had not rose yet.

"Hiccup?" she called as she got up the stairs, but only heard a cough. She finally made it to his room and noticed how Toothless was sitting next to the bed, watching him with worried eyes. Hiccup's hair was a mess and he was sitting on the side of his bed, as if he had still been asleep minutes ago.

"Astrid?" he asked and got up. "Sorry I-" he started, but started coughing.

"Are you okay?" she asked, reaching for him. She put her hand on his shoulder.

"Yeah, just overselpt," he replied. "I can be out in a few minutes. There's probably a ton of things to do today. Just give me a minute," he said.

"It's okay. The snow stopped and everyone seemed fine. I rode with Stormfly to make sure everything was fine. Just sit down. You look... well horrible," she said, letting out a small laugh. He had, in fact, bags under his eyes and just seemed utterly tired.

"Hey, it's not funny," he replied, but started laughing too, which quickly turned into some more coughing. Toothless made a worried sound.

"Hey Toothless, you should go play with Stormfly outside. She's waiting for you. I'll take care of him," The Night Fury's eyes lingered on Hiccup, but he did leave to go outside. Astrid turned to Hiccup, sat beside him and ran a hand through his messy hair.

"You're sick," she said and he sighed.

"No, I'm not sick. I can't be. There's plenty of stuff to do, even if the snow stopped," he blurted.

"I'll make sure everything's okay. You really need to rest. You've been running around in the snow for two days, it's normal,"

"I still can't be sick. The chief can't be sick. My dad never was," he replied, looking at the ground.

"Your dad was well... your dad. Look, if you don't rest up it's going to be worse-" she was interrupted by his cough again. "worse, as I said and it's going to last longer. Look I'll go out and make sure everyone is fine. I'll ask Fishlegs to help with the trader ships that are coming. Everything's good. Now you get back into bed," she leaned to him, laying down a kiss on his forehead and getting up.

"But Astrid..." he muttered.

"I'll be back soon okay. Get some sleep!"

She came back an hour and a half later to the same calm and dark hut. Stormfly and Toothless were still out, playing in the snow. She got up the stairs and found him burried under the covers. At least, he had listened to her and gotten some more sleep. She put down on the table near his bed the food and strange mixture she had gotten from Gothi for him to drink. She then sat on the bed and put her hand on his forehead. He was burning up.

"Hey," she whispered and he shifted in the bed, slowly opening his eyes. He managed to smile at her, but still looked very tired. "Before you worry, everything is good. Fishlegs is going to meet with the traders ships, the twins haven't done anything stupid yet and almost everyone is out playing in the snow,"

"That's good," he replied, his voice hoarse.

"I also got something for you from Gothi. Mind sitting up?" she asked and reached for the bottle.

"Looks disgusting," he said as he grabbed it.

"I know," she let out a chuckle. "But she said it works wonders. And you're really burning up, you might have a fever..."

He swallowed it in one shot and coughed. Astrid grabbed his hand. "Yep. Disgusting," he added and she laughed. "But thank you," he cupped his cheek with his warm hand. She gave him a smile, the one he thought was the prettiest in all the archipelago, and she slid her arm behind him, bringing him closer. He laid his head on hers and sighed.

"You know, you really did a good job with the storm. Everyone had plenty of supplies, no one was hurt and you made sure of that, at your own expense. We all know being chief's a tough job, and I know you probably think there's a million things you could have done better or think that you should be up right now, but you're a great chief, Hiccup. We all know you are. Especially me," she said, while stroking his hair, but did not get any answer. His eyes were closed.

"I love you," she whispered. She would stay there with him until he woke up.
