8 : We Are

Astrid had been in the house for a while now, sitting at the table with a bowl of stew in front of her that she had barely touched. She kept playing with her spoon. Her mind kept spinning so fast.

In moments like these, she still wished Stormfly was around. Going on a ride with her and feeling the wind through her hair would always clear her mind. Even if it had now been years and everyone had adapted to their lives on New Berk without dragons, they still had not completly moved on. How could they after all these adventures?

She knew she ought to be happy, and she was, but still a seed of doubt had been planted in her mind. She was stepping into unknown territory. She was Astrid, a warrior queen, chieftess once a dragon rider, and yet she was scared of what would come next.

She jumped as the door opened to reveal Hiccup. The smile on his face seemed to immediatly calm her down a little. He came next to her and kissed the top of her head.

"How was your day?" she asked. She still needed time to calm down. Her heart was about to explode in her chest and her palms were sweaty.

"Fine. There was a disagreement with one of the traders about the price of fish... It's boring anyways," he said. "I've been looking everywhere for you. You're always out by this time," he then added and he was right. Astrid usually was out training by herself or sometimes teaching fighting techniques to the younger. She always prefered the outside.

"Yeah... I was just feeling a little... It's all fine, I went to see Gothi and-" she started but Hiccup interrupted her.

"Are you okay? Why didn't you tell me? I thought something felt wrong this morning. I should have stayed..." he said. Oh, she knew he would be happy. He would be perfect. But what about her?

"I'm fine, Hiccup," she replied. He sat down in front of her and but his hand over hers. She stared at it for a second. "There's nothing wrong with me, but..." she started. It seemed stupid to just tell him that way, but she had no idea how.

"We're having a baby," she said.

He squeezed her hand a looked at her, shocked. He took a deep breath.

"A baby?" he asked and a smile finally formed on his lips.

"Yeah," she nodded and noticed him tearing up. Oh, Hiccup, she thought. A second later he had taken her in his arms, lifted her from her chair and held her as tight has he ever had. She sighed in relief, her head buried in his chest.

"We're having a baby," he repeated as he let her down.

"We are," she answered. He brought his hands to cup her cheeks and kissed her deeply. He pulled back and put a hand through her hair.

"I can't... I just can't find the words! Astrid..." he breathed and hugged her once more. She felt a tear on her cheeck and could not tell if it was from her or Hiccup. "A baby..." he whispered.

"You're so... happy," she said. She felt so relieved, after seeing his reaction.

"Happy? I'm over the moon, Astrid! I just can't believe it!" he said. She wrapped her arms around him even tighter.

She knew that with Hiccup, everything would be fine. It was meant to be. In that moment, she could not wait to be a mother.
