"Do you trust me?" Zoey asked as she and Kai hid behind a lonely trashcan. "Not really but—"
"Good. Let's go." They quickly evaded the chaos that the kingdom had broken into that afternoon. "Where exactly are we going?" Kai huffed between breaths. They were now running to avoid the impact that the lasers of the robots were now shooting.
"Well, I figured since no one has seen the Twilight Princess around for quite some time now, that we could sneak into the palace." Kai's eyes nearly popped out of his head. "What? Are you nuts? We can't be seen there! We could get caught!"
"Not if there's nobody there."
"I'm not so sure about that......"
"It's been abandoned." She kept treading on towards the palace, not matter what he said. There something there that she was dead set on getting.
An explosion occurred on the other side of the kingdom. "Welp, you can kiss Flore's Floral goodbye. Never liked that shop anyway."
"Wait," Zoey stopped. "I don't think that was the place that was hit." Kai moved his gaze over to the corner of his eye, unsure. "You think.... could it be? ..."
"I think it was." They immediately turned the direction they were running to over to the spot of the bursting flames. Zoey kneeled over in shock as she witnessed the burning of roses and willows. "No...not this place..." she mumbled beneath her breath. Dark, crippled petals fell at the same rate that a single tear would. The wood of an spruce tree split, where another's leaves had turned to nothing but ashes. As for the sacred grave, it still remained untouched. But Zoey knew that it wouldn't stay that way for long. Whoever had done this clearly had something deeply serious against the Twilight Princess, as they went as far as burning her secret garden because of it. A place that was so close to her heart. It was almost like they broke her heart itself. And they would be back to finish the careless act.
Zoey got up and slowly started to step back, not letting her gaze off the horrific scene. "You ok?" Kai asked. She nodded, expression staying the same. "Yes. Come on. We should be leaving now."
.....
The palace was cold and dark. Not a single soul inhabited the majestic structure. Only ghosts of the past that were not yet ready to let go. Zoey felt for them. It must be hard to let go when you're not ready to.
"It should be up here," Zoey placed her hand on the railing connected the creaky, spiral staircase that led up to the East Tower, and the Twilight Princess's chambers. "How do you know that whatever you'll looking for will help us take down this bounty hunter?" Kai asked as he followed her from close behind.
"I don't," she replied. "But we can at least try. What other choice do we have?" Kai shrugged to himself as they continued to climb up the staircase. He could tell how old this staircase was, as each step contained several cracks engraved on its stone surface. Cobwebs surrounded every corner, and the area around them suddenly faded to darkness. Zoey reached out her hand to feel around as soon as they reached the top. She felt something wet and cold on the wall, and nearly shrieked.
"What is it? Where's the light here?" Kai spun around. "This place has been abandoned for two years. Of course, no one left the light on. Did you not here me earlier?" She traced the entire area of the wall that the odd substance covered using her fingers. "Well, it sure would have been nice if they did." Kai sighed. "What now?"
"There's...there's something here...." She was able to feel the shapes of letters. Wet letters. "A message. Or something." A burst of light flickered on all of a sudden. Zoey gasped, seeing what she was feeling in the source of the light. "Found the candle," Kai exclaimed, proudly raising the newly lit candle up in air.
