Kiera's P.O.V:

It was just another day at the office. I was checking some files when I got a call. It was from Sofia's school. I answered it.

"Hello, is this Mrs.Kingsmore?" a woman's voice said.

"No, but I am Stella's guardian," I said. The other end was quiet for a moment. Then she spoke again.

"I'm Stella's gym teacher. Can you please come to the school right now? There has been an incident and Stella is a little upset," she said in a careful tone.

"What happened?" I asked with panic in my voice. I was already standing and picking up my bag.

"Umm.. It would be better if we told you after you came here," she said.

"Okay, I'll be there in 15 minutes," I said and cut the call. I started walking when I noticed a lean figure standing infront of the door. It was Mr. Dubois.

"Sir.., I'm sorry but there is an emergency. I have to leave," I told him. I had never taken a day off in my two years of work. I also worked overtime. I had been awarded employee of the month countless times too. I hoped he would let me leave considering my record.

"Sure. I didn't mean to eavesdrop but is your daughter okay?" he said with his eyebrows furrowed like he was concerned. Huh, then he hadn't heard the 'I'm her guardian' part.

"I don't know. I was just about to leave. I mean, is that okay?" I asked with uncertainty in my voice. His green eyes looked at me as if they could see right through me.

"Of course," he said. I started walking fast towards the door.

It took me exactly 12 minutes to get there. I might have gone over the speed limit but I was worried about Sofia.

I went straight to the principal's office. Sofia was sitting there, crying. I went and hugged her. The principal looked at me somberly.

"What's wrong?" I asked Sofia but she wouldn't say anything so I looked at the principal for an explanation.

"Stella is being teased by some senior boys frequently but she hasn't ever said anything. The hall monitor was walking  in the halls today when a guy intentionally spilled coffee on her. Also, some kids stole her clothes after gym class but she had extra clothes in the locker. I'm so sorry this has been happening with your daughter. Her gym teacher called you and then came to me and told me everything. The boys have been suspended for a month," she said. I just stared at her. It took me some time to find words.

"This has been going on for how long?" I asked her. I was close to being hysterical.

"More than 6 months I heard," she said. 6 months.. 6 fucking months of my Sofia being bullied and she never said anything to me. Never told me a word. Tears ran down my cheeks before I could stop them. I looked at Sofia.

"Why didn't you tell me, honey?" I asked her in a gentle tone.

"I didn't want to bother you you already work so hard for me," she muttered and I couldn't stop crying. This sweet innocent girl. She was so kind. My Sofia..

"If they say anything ever again, you're telling me," I told her and hugged her. The principal muttered her apologies again and again and then escorted us outside. I took Sofia home. She was exhausted and drifted into sleep.

I wished Stefan was here. He would have known what to do. Sofia would have been so happy if Stefan was there for her. He would play the big overprotective  brother role perfectly. I missed Stefan. I always would. I wasn't a drinker but it felt nice to just relax and open a bottle of wine sometimes. And so I did. I sat in the balcony for almost an hour like that.

*Ring*Ring* My phone rang. I picked it up. It was an unknown number.

"Hello, is this Kiera?" a familiar voice said. But I couldn't exactly recognise who it was.

"Yes, this is Kiera speaking. Who am I talking to?" I asked politely.

"I'm Alessandro," the voice said. Oh.. Mr.Dubois.

"Oh Sir, I'm sorry. I couldn't recognise your voice," I blurted out.

"No, it's okay. You probably don't have my number saved," he said.

"No, I don't," I told him.

"I was calling to ask whether your daughter was okay," he said. He was so nice to ask about Sofia like this.

"Yes, she is okay now," I told him.

"I'm glad. You are a good mother. I saw how concerned you were about her," he said.

"I'm not her mother..," I said. Okay, I shouldn't have said that. Must have been the wine.

"Oh..., but everyone in the office says...," he muttered then stopped.

"Yes, it's a misconception. She is like my sister," I told him. Okay, too much information. I should have stopped.

"Oh..," he said. Like it was making sense.

"Well, I'll work overtime tomorrow to make up for today," I told him.

"You always work overtime," he said and chuckled. It was a warm sound.

"Then I'll work a little more overtime," I said. He laughed.

"Okay then. See you," he said.

"Okay," I said.

"Okay," he said again. I should've been stopping. He was my boss. I needed to think about Sofia. Sofia..

"Okay, bye," I said and ended the call.
