Kris

I stomped through the main doors of our high school building the next morning, eyes alert and searching for a certain emo deer. My eyes must've displayed my rage, as people moved out of my way as I stormed the halls.

I threw the classroom door open. Several people looked over at me, but they immediately looked away after seeing my expression. I spotted Noelle near the back, leaning back on her chair with her feet on the desk. I slammed my hand on the desktop. She jumped and nearly fell off of her chair.

"I want a word."

Next thing I knew, I was staring her down behind the school building. She didn't dare decline, not with how I asked. I was posses and she knew it.

"Make this quick, freak. I've got things to do," she said coldly, trying to hide the apprehension from her face. My blood boiled.

"What kinds of things to do? Like beating your girlfriend?" I spat. She froze.

"Wha... what did you say?" Her face paled.

"I know what you do to her, Noelle. What gives you the right to do that!? What makes you think that's okay!?"

"K-Kris, don't get involved in this. You don't know what you're talking about."

"Like hell I don't know! I know perfectly well what I'm saying! I talked to Susie about it! she told me what you do. You think it's okay to tell her what she can and can't do, who she can and can't talk to. You think it's okay to tell her where she can and can't go. You think it's okay to- to hurt her!"

I watched as Noelle's wide, horrified eyes filled with tears. Good, I thought, feeling a sense of justice. She should be upset!

"I'm sorry... You're right. I'm hurting her. I never wanted to do that to her. I was just scared that... That if I didn't, I would get hurt again, or someone else would hurt her. I only wanted to protect her, but it turns out, I'm the one she needs protection from. I'm- I'm terrible." She sat down on the ground and began to sob. I felt a twinge of guilt, but I pushed it aside.

"I just- I thought I could protect her the way I wish someone had protected me all those years ago. I guess I was trying to make it up to myself, in a way. Instead, I did something so much worse. I made her trust me, care about me, even. And then, I betrayed her and took advantage of her innocence. I'm just as bad as he was. There's no way she could ever forgive me." I stopped. Something she said didn't make sense.

"Wait, who's 'he'? Why did you need protection years ago?"

Noelle looked up at me, eyes clouded. "It's a long story." And so, she began.

...

"Hey, can you please help me?" Noelle looked up at the strange man looking down at her. She put down her plastic shovel and brushed the sand off of her fur. "I'm looking for my nephew. He's about your age, and he was playing in this playground a little while ago. I stepped away for a minute, and now I can't find him. Have you seen a little bit around here?"

Noelle looked around at the deserted playground. She shook her head at him. "No, sorry. I haven't seen him."

"But- are you sure?"

She thought for a minute. "Well, there were some kids here earlier. Maybe I have? I don't really know. I'm sorry."

The man's eyes out up with hope. "I have a picture of him in my car. If you saw him, would you recognize him?" Noelle nodded yes.

So, the man lead Noelle to his car, but she never saw a photo of his nephew.

...

"He- he- he... He took me. He took me, and he forced me to do terrible things, and- I was so scared. I'm still scared. I'm scared he'll find me. I never told anyone. I never even wanted to think about it. I couldn't. I know it wrong, and that I've probably just made it worse for some other little girls, but I could never bring myself to talk about it."

I stared at her for a few seconds, shocked speechless. I had no clue what I could say at that point. My previous guilt expanded, and I felt horrible for how I acted towards her.

"This is dumb," she said. She stood up looked around nervously before starting to walk away. "I'm going home. Tell Susie I-" She paused. "Tell her I said I'm sorry."
