Valerius' POV
"NO! IT'S NOT TRUE! WHOSE THE FUCKER RESPONSIBLE!!!! I WANT TO KNOW!"
Of all the most ridiculous-I can't believe the stupidity that would come out of people's mouths and the naive bastards who believe them!
"Calm yourself, Vanlentine!" He says with the command of an Alpha. And with a instinctive whimper, my head tilts in submission. God I hate the Alpha voice, but the way it can affect a wolf is baffling. "At least you can confirm my suspicions that the rumors are as truthful as the people who speak them. Still, for the sake of my Betas as witness and the sake of being thorough, I will nonetheless commence the probing. If neither of you have anything to hide truly, then this will be an easy and quick process."
"Neither of- What Bullsh-"
He growls in warning, causing my wolf to shut my mouth. It still doesn't stop my muffled growl from making known my annoyance.
"It's alright. I've nothing to hide. I'll allow you willingly to enter."
"Then we will begin."
I watch as the three wolves search through the confines of his head. Even without my knowing exact details, I still see the pain coming through. At one point, his tears start to fall, affecting all three wolves in the process. An Alpha and two Betas! What the hell!
"Baby, what's wrong? What's happened?!" He's still under the probing. When wolves use a link for something like this, it normally doesn't cause so much pain to any of the wolves except the subject. That is usually by virtue of some intense shit or resistance from the subject. But if he were resisting, it wouldn't cause them pain, it would cause focus. Crying does everything but help one focus. But given that this is happening in front of my eyes, only worries me about my mate even more. They finish with a gasp from Nathan and heavy pants from all three tear-stained men.
"Nate..."
"I'm sorry you had to see that. I really didn't want you to-"
He is interrupted with a crushing hug. As touching as it is, it isn't helping my concern die at all.
"Can someone please fill me in on what's happened?!"
"Well...it's true that neither of you have abused the other."
"I don't care about that?!" I run right in front of him, seeing his tired eyes, and beg him, "what's wrong?! What did they do? Please tell me."
"It's alright, Val, really." I don't believe a word from him and it is only confirmed further by the Alpha's sigh.
"Now that that is settled, hopefully, we can put an end to this malarkey of a rumor."
"Stanley, please, tell me what's wrong with my mate."
"Unfortunately, under pack law, all thoughts from a probe must be kept wishing the individuals involved, unless the subject gives permission." I look to my mate pleadingly, but he continues to look at the ground guiltily. With a sigh of my own, turn back to the Alpha.
"Then answer me this. Why did a probing that wasn't supposed to hurt cause four wolves to cry? What happened to cause this kind of pain?"
"......", he looks to my mate. My mate looks to the Alpha and nods. "Val....he is going through a lot right now. This morning....his mother passed in her sleep...." I turn back to my mate, devastated. She was one of the sweetest women I've known, and the one who created this man in front of me. If held it in this long, I can't imagine the agony it's caused. How was I not able to sense his pain?
"That's not all", he interrupts my thoughts of where I could have seen any signs. I turn with shock clear as day on my face. You gotta be kidding me!
