The BloodWing camp shimmered with the light of liquid fire rolling down the volcano.

And in the harsh weather was a dragon named Gory.

Gory was the well-known BloodWing at her camp, for she was one of the best fighters in the BloodWing community. She had more than fighting to do, though. In fact, she had to take care of her younger brother, Vein.

Of course, it was easy taking care of young dragonets for Gory. All she'd have to do for Vein was thwack him lightly with her well-armed tail and he'd do what he was asked. She could get him to fetch some lava for Gory to drink, or make him set up her supply tent. It looked harsh, sure, but Gory knew that this would help Vein get his strong muscles and fearless behavior.

After a full day of training Vein on how to hit a mountain to make rocks fall on an enemy, she took a walk through the barren landscape. This wasn't what BloodWings would do in a lifetime, but since she was a skilled fighter, she could handle anybody who dared attack her. She thought about the last dragon she'd kill, which wasn't very long ago. It was easy to defeat that CoralFin. Just two quick slashes to his gills and he was dead. Queen Magma had given her a reward for killing the most obscure tribe, and she got a very high honor.

Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard the sound of footsteps. She whirled around, and Gory nearly sliced open . . . Vein?

"What are you doing here?" Gory snarled at her brother.

"I . . . I just wanted to follow you and---well, I just---I mean I---" he stammered.

"Silence!" She roared. "Why are you here?  You are not allowed here! This is too dangerous for you. You'll die here because this place is DANGEROUS!"

Vein seemed personally hurt. Gory thought he would run away from her and back to his tent, but he seemed quite angry. "No no NO! I want to stay here! Why do I have to go?"

"Because," Gory said, grinding her teeth. "I said so."

"And I say no!" Vein said. "I want to come . . . or else . . . or else . . ."

"Go back right now," Gory said, deathly calm, "or I'll kill you with my tail. I have the authority to kill my disobedient siblings, you know."

Now Vein looked truly scared. He turned and whirled away, and Gory could see his tears.

"Coward," she muttered.

But as Vein ran away, back to his camp, his spiky tail thumped against the mountain, unusually hard.

Gory didn't really mind that since she knew he couldn't knock a rock off yet. A rumbling suddenly shook the land she was on, though, and she turned up to see a huge chunk of rock before it slammed into her.
