"Man, this sucks!" Vein mumbled as he was dragged in chains.
When Vein had woken up, he had thought he was dead. He felt a stinging pain, and he saw blood around him. He shot up, sure that there was a horrible wound somewhere. But to his surprise, his only injury was a trickle of blood going down his face. Marble must've intended to kill him, but Vein guessed that the fire drove her back before she could actually slash him. Vein considered himself lucky until he learned that he killed seven TimeWings in the hall, which was where the blood was from. The only few people who survived was Marble (but he'd heard that half of her right front arm had burned off. Snuggly also survived, but now her name was no laughing matter. The person who had chatted to Marble (his name was Blizzard) had survived, but the rest of the dragons who'd fainted died.
Snuggly, Marble, Blizzard, and four other TimeWings were furious at him for laughing at the president's name and setting a fire. The way they saw it, he put a disguise by laughing so he could secretly assassin the president. This was so unfair, Vein tried to explain, but they cut him off. He was sentenced to execution, but he was put in jail first.
Now, as he sat here waiting for his execution day, he tried to entertain himself. The only thing he could do was squash the bugs that were crawling in the cell. His snout was clamped shut, so he couldn't really burn the chains. He thought and thought about what had happened the night before. He worried that he wouldn't be able to at least get out of this smelly cell. Heck, he'd even go back to the Volcano Kingdom if he had to choose.
What was worse was that there was a fountain of water. Vein didn't know why they put it there for drinking if their prisoner's snout was clamped, and Vein couldn't drink it anyway. It would be nice to have a nice, frothy drink of lava because he hadn't had a slurp in quite some time. But of course they couldn't bring that here. TimeWings wouldn't be able to carry and build a fountain for liquid fire.
Ugh. He just knew that he'd have to---wait a minute---Why aren't there any guards? Now he could add this to his list of Why BloodWings Are Significantly Smarter than Their Enemies. For one thing, Queen Magma would have at least half a dozen guards guarding the cell. If the prisoner escaped and was recaught, they'd either be slashed to death or put in prison again with twice that many guards.
He suddenly heard footsteps. Vein quickly went slack and crumpled to his seat.
"We should free him," said one TimeWing.
"Are you as dumb as a BloodWing?" Spat another dragon---Marble. She sounded as if she was in pain, so maybe she really did injure her arm. "He'll kill us all, and run away. I say we kill him while in chains. I thought he could be a friend, like Scorch, but no. He's a typical BloodWing traitor, and I'm happy to lead the execution."
Vein suddenly felt himself getting hotter. He only ever felt this once---when he was two years old, seconds before Gory died. He nearly burst into flames, but that time he was too young. Now he felt the anger rising again. I will NOT die by a TimeWing who is missing half an arm. I will NOT---
Suddenly the chains on his snout, arms, and legs haphazardly melted. He burst out from his seat, then realized he was on the floor. So, the seat even melted. Do they at least make things fireproof?
He heard the footsteps growing louder, and he rammed himself into the bars.
