WARNING: Hints of body shaming in this chapter. Please keep in mind my main character is mean, and in order to further develop and grow later on, she needs to be flawed.

Money absolutely does buy happiness.
I bite back a squeal at my cute, new shoes. They're a pair of hall platform sandals --Saint Laurent-- embedded in patent, black leather resting on a four and a half inch square heel. Luke went shopping with me after I caught him cheating on me again, and even though it doesn't erase the hot anger I feel at what he did, I have a reason to smile this morning.
The clicking sound of their soles hitting the school's vinyl floors makes several heads turn my way, including those of the boys on Luke's football team. To say boys cause less drama than girls would be a lie-- being friends with either gender can bring issues of all kinds to a relationship. More than once, a handful of his buddies have messaged me to ask me out-- and those are just his good friends.
Jake, their quarterback, is the only one to say something as I walk past them in the hallway. He looks me up and down, letting out a low whistle at the bodycon fit of my baby pink mini-dress.
"Looking good today, Samantha," he says with a wink, moving from his place against the lockers. He strides toward me, trying his best to look confident as he approaches my walking figure, but I can tell he's trying too hard to appear cool in front of his teammates. It irritates me, and I roll my eyes, brushing him off before he even has the chance to reach me.
"I always look good, Jake. Now, fuck off."
He grins, throwing an arm around my shoulders, looking much too pleased to be touching me as he lets out a low chuckle.
"Ooh! Sexy," he retorts, tightening his grip around me. He juts his chin to the books I'm carrying, extending his free hand to reach for them.
"You taking history?" he asks, turning a textbook over to inspect the cover. I snatch it back, shouldering him off me. What does he care what classes I may or may not be taking?
"I said fuck off, asshole."
He nods, grinning maniacally.
"I love it when you talk dirty," he says, placing a hand on his chest. I roll my eyes again, when will this guy take the hint?
"I'm not sure Luke would be happy to see his best friend hitting on me."
I adjust the books to how I had them, walking in the direction of my nearing locker. Jake trails right behind me, following me all the way to my compartment as I reach to open it. He leans against the wall, watching me closely while I put my stuff away, quickly gaining a twinkle in his brown eyes.
"He's probably too busy groping a brunette in the parking lot to notice."
I instantly straighten up my back, feeling annoyance bubble beneath my veins. Why does everyone think they have a say in what I do or don't do with Luke? It's none of their business what goes on between us or who cheated on who. It's just their way of justifying flirting with me.
"Don't you have anything better to do?" I ask sharply, shoving my things into my locker. Why can't Luke keep it in his pants for more than twenty four hours? Monday just started and already he goes off like a stray dog-- humping anything within his path.
We literally just went though this, this weekend! Why am I not enough for him? Why can't he stop embarrassing me for just this once? Take this Saturday, for example. We'd gone out to Berry's Burgers with some of our friends in the football team along with some cheerleaders on my squad. We were celebrating the regionals the girls and I had just won on Saturday-- we ranked first place in our district and division-- and as it turns out, it doesn't matter to Luke whether or not we're in the most public space when he decides to make me look stupid.
