Samantha

"Where were you last night?" I ask innocently, inspecting my nails and leaning nonchalantly against the wall in front of Luke.

The same question I've been asking him for the past two years hangs balanced in the tense air between us. The boy in question is digging through his locker trying to find his history textbook. He searches the contents of his compartment without a care in the world, ignoring me or pretending to.

We've gotten so used to this same routine that it doesn't matter how big of a deal I make the situation anymore, everything I say and do is expected. In fact, if I don't confront him, the world around us feels off balance.

He continues to sift through his materials and finally pulls himself out of the small space, holding his history textbook in hand. He straightens himself and turns to face me with an annoyed sigh.

"I went out with some friends," he mutters, throwing his backpack over his shoulder and shutting his locker door closed. He plasters on a charming smile for some passing people and waves at them when they say hi.

I ignore them when they turn to me.

"Yeah? Well it must have been some invisible guys because I didn't see them in the picture," I chirp, placing a hand on his chest to stop him from leaving. He looks down to where I have my hand. He averts his eyes, looking everywhere except at me.

"Samantha, I have to get to class. Please move aside," he says, pointedly ignoring my observation and prying my hands off him. I smile sarcastically and extend a leg in front of him, stopping him again.

"Samantha," he pleads, still not looking into my eyes.

"Luke," I respond patiently. I can do this all day. He exhales deeply, as if asking God for mercy.

"Samantha, don't start. It's too early for this shit," he says, running a hand through his hair.

I cross my arms and tap my foot in response.

"I could say the same thing about you," I retort, "We're drinking early in the week now?"

Luke's blue eyes snap in my direction, narrowing in irritation. He grabs my arm and pulls me into the nearest hallway, hiding us from peeping eyes. A few students are milling around, but none seem to notice us standing in the corner.

"Hey! Lay off, alright!? And lower your voice, somebody might hear you," he hisses, flitting his eyes around. I feel my eye twitch.

"Where were you last night, Luke?" I repeat, pursing my lips for the excuses about to pour out his mouth. He licks his lips, no doubt lubricating his lies.

"I already told you! I went out with some friends!" he defends, running his hands through his hair nervously.

"Liar!" I shriek, fisting my hands at my sides. Luke's nose flares up and his own hands clench into fists.

"Jesus christ, Samantha! Fuck off!" he growls, pushing himself off the wall and turning to leave. I grab the back of his shirt, pulling him back. I am so  not done with him! He doesn't get to leave when he's spent all week chewing and spitting out girls the way I spend my money on clothes.
