Athena
"What do you mean Lord Hades is gone?!" Thanatos asks slowly, as if enunciating every syllable will help him make sense of the words.
Apollo frowns, casting him a bored glance.
"I thought we came down here because you of all people would understand what's going on..." he says flatly, glancing at him with an unimpressed expression. I roll my eyes, trust Apollo to be the one stupid enough to question Death.
Thanatos gives him a look before turning to me, slightly annoyed. His eyes seem to be asking me why'd you have to bring him?
I shrug, approaching him by his place in front of his office desk. It was neat and organized- something I hadn't anticipated.
I hadn't known what to expect when I arrived in the Underworld. I hadn't encountered Thanatos in several millennia- in fact, the last time I saw him, he hadn't yet been appointed soul-retriever. He was still living on Olympus, trying to fit his way in and discover where he belonged.
At the time, I was too busy being schooled and trained in my field of expertise to pay anyone attention. I was about to be delegated goddess of wisdom when he decided to move to the Underworld with Hades. The one thing I manage to remember from that time, was the abrasive and cold nature with which he was greeted by the other gods and goddesses.
The son of Nyx held an appearance foreign to olympians. He wasn't ugly by any means, but there was something about his ghostly looks that didn't appeal to the sunny gods. He was freakishly tall with skin so ridiculously pale- it was almost transparent. And he always wore a pensive, serious expression- as if he could see into your future, and it wasn't pretty.
It was new, it was different, and it was scary.
I guess I expected him to be someone with a harsh and caustic persona. To my surprise though, he turned out to be anything but. Since the moment he met us outside Hades' palace gates, he's given thought to my opinion and heard what I had to say. That isn't a quality you find in every Olympian god. Most of the time, they shrug off a woman's opinion- goddess or not.
I come to a stand directly in front of him.
"All I know is that I saw a couple of men open a portal and take him away. They covered his head with a velvet bag, and muffled his mouth with a rag that seemed to have been drenched in some kind of potion or tonic. It worked quickly and effectively, shutting down his entire system in less than thirty seconds. Other than that, I don't know what else happened..."
Thanatos gazes at me warily for a few moments, tilting his head to the side- assessing me. He narrows his eyes.
"That's it? You didn't take a good look at their profiles?" he asks, suspicious. I bite my lip, feeling Apollo's stare penetrate my thoughts.
Come on Athena, didn't you say that's why we came down here? To tell him about Zeus?
I flit my eyes to him quickly before settling them on Thanatos again. What if word gets out to Zeus that I was suspicious about him? No- that I knew about what he was up to? What if Thanatos or Apollo let it slip? I could get some kind of cruel or unusual punishment simply for thinking Zeus was doing something wrong.
