"New school, new me", you think to yourself as you walk through the large double doors of your new high school in Tulsa. Your parents had received a large amount of money, enough money to move them from working class to upper class. They were extremely happy, and their whole life had changed, the way they acted, their emotions, the way they spoke, everything. But you felt the same, the money didn't change you.
After they received the money, they moved from Texas to Oklahoma to try and start a new, rich life. Your new house had a pool and 4 spare bedrooms. You felt sad. You liked your old life, old friends, old town.
But anyway, as you walked through the door a tall, thin boy with curly light brown hair pushed into you. "Watch it", he spat in your face.
"Bob!" You hear a soft voice yell, "you did that on purpose!"
You look over to see a red haired girl, glaring at this Bob boy. Her eyes were deep brown and her face was soft and gentle. She then turns and smiles at you. "Hello doll, are you new here?"
"Yeah, I just moved here", you reply.
"You're beautiful", she says, looking you up and down. You felt as if you were being inspected, like you had to be a certain standard to be her friend .
"Thankyou so much, I'm y/n", you smile, trying to be friendly.
"Hello y/n, I'm Sherry but my friends call me Cherry because of my hair". She said.
You and your newly made friend spent the rest of the day together. You see that she is popular, many boys stare at her as she walks past. Throughout the day, Bob kept coming over to you two and trying to speak to Cherry, but it seemed like she didn't want to speak to him.
"Hey, y/n, the boys and I are going to the drive in tonight, want to come with us?" She smiles, her eyes brightening up the room.
"Probably not, I'm sorry Cherry but I'm more of a loner, I mean like I prefer to sit at home and read". You reply, embarrassed.
"No worries," she says swiftly and turns around to speak to another girl.
You realise that you should get to know some people in Tulsa, I mean, you are gonna have to spend a few years with them.
"Actually Cherry", you say tapping her shoulder, "I will come".
"Good, well pick you up from yours at 7:30".
You smile and finish writing.
"Oh and y/n, if you see a tall, handsome black haired greaser, you keep out his way. His name is Dallas Winston and he'll make your life a living hell. That boy is evil, I never want to see him again, if I do I'll probably fall in love with him." She says dreamily.
"Why, what happened? Has he hurt you," you say, feeling a slight regret that you said yes to going out with them.
"Nope, not directly. He's been to prison but got let out early. Just don't let him get to you".
You're sat in your bedroom. You have decided to wear high waisted jeans with a belt and an oversized white t shirt tucked in with a pink bomber jacket over the top.
You hear a car horn and run down stairs and outside. You jump into the car, next to Cherry. There is 3 other boys that you haven't seen before, and Bob.
"Nice jeans, you look like a greaser". Bob says to you.
"Shut your trap Bob, she doesn't know". Cherry says angrily.
"I'm sorr-" you start to say.
"Don't apologise, you don't look like a greaser, and if you did it wouldn't matter because everybody is equal". Cherry smiles at you. She puts her hand on yours and says "it'll be okay".
She could obviously sense that you're nervous. You felt tense in the car with these boys. It smelt of cigarettes and alcohol. Bob had a bottle of alcohol in his hand and was drinking it while driving. The car then parks and everyone gets out.
You leave the group to go to the toilet. When you get back, Cherry is crying and you run over to comfort her. "What happened?" You ask.
"Bob pushed me", she choked, tears pouring down her face.
"I'm sorry, do you want to go home?" You ask, praying for her to say yes.
"No! I paid for this damn movie so I'm going to watch it" she says stubbornly.
She then leads you to sit down in a less crowded area. You were both sat in a deck chair each. The wind was sharp and cold. You had goosebumps on your arms.
Suddenly you hear a crash behind you. You hear that it's 3 boys, sitting down in the 3 chairs directly behind you, even though there were loads of empty chairs around.
"Well well well, who's this little greaser girl?" You hear a deep voice say from behind you.
You see that Cherry is shaking and grabs your leg, telling you to ignore the voice.
"You're just going to ignore me? And we meet again, Cherry Valance".
"Leave us alone", Cherry says sternly, hiding the fact that she is shaking.
"Well sorry, sorry that you have a problem with shouting in my face, I'm getting a coke."
You hear him get out of his chair.
Both you and Cherry turn around to look at this man. He was tall and skinny, with black, greasy hair. You didn't see his face, but could tell that he was very pretty by the way that all the girls looked at him. You knew that this was Dallas Winston. A trail of smoke was behind him from the cigarette that he had in his mouth.
"Are you two going to start on us too?" You hear Cherry say to the other two boys.
You look at them. They both had black greasy hair, with denim jackets and worn jeans. They were both scruffy and looked like they hadn't washed in a while. They both looked around 14 and had very pretty, innocent faces.
"No", the slightly older one said.
"You two don't look the type, why don't you two come and sit with us, you can protect us." Cherry smiles, warmly.
Both of the boys stood up. The slightly older looking one sat next to you. "What's your name?" You say. "Ponyboy, what's yours?" He says back.
"Y/n, Ponyboy is a very unique name". You say, trying to make conversation.
"My dad was a very unique man, I have a brother called Sodapop, it even says so on his birth certificate". He says. You can hear a strong Oklahoma accent in his voice. You smile at him.
You then hear Cherry say "Johnny this is y/n, y,n this is Johnny Cade". You smile and wave at Johnny, who was sat the other side of Cherry.
You kept talking to Ponyboy all night, and Cherry spoke to Johnny all night. Soon enough, the movie had finished. You had barely even looked at the screen. The 4 of you stood up. You had guessed that Dallas Winston has gone home. "Where's Dallas", Cherry then asked. You felt like she read your mind.
"I think he went", Johnny says.
"Thank god", you hear yourself say.
"Poor Dally ain't that bad if you get to know him. He's tough and all." Johnny says.
"I don't want to know him and I don't want him to know us", Cherry says in response.
Suddenly you see Bobs car pull up,
"Cherry, what are you doing?" You hear Bob shout.
"You pushed me", Cherry shouted back, not even looking in his direction.
"That's no reason to be hanging about with these bums".
"Who you calling bums?" Ponyboy shouts back.
Bob ignored him and grabs Cherry's arm and pulls her toward the car.
"Fine!" Cherry shouts, as she's getting in. "Come on y/n".
"No" Bob says, "greaser girl can stay out there with the dirty greaser scum".
The car then speeds off and you are left stood there with Ponyboy and Johnny, two random boys that you've only just met. You're shocked that Cherry left you, and that wearing jeans was so controversial.
You walk for about half an hour with them, just talking about Tulsa and what there is to do. You learn that Ponyboy has another 2 brothers, and that his parents had died. You also learnt that Johnny doesn't get on with his parents and they fight all the time, leaving him to sleep outside in a parking lot. You're then outside your house.
"Goodbye", you wave at them. They smile back at you and wave.
You felt glad that you had finally met some good people. Such a tiring day, you thought, little did you know what would happens tomorrow...
