Summary: Patton and Logan are worried about their new son, Virgil, but after a small incident, some swearing, and a good telling off things might be looking up for the little family.
A/N: based off an @more-incorect-quotes post:
Patton: *to Virgil* In this house, we don't say bad words.
Logan: *in the distance* FUCK!
Warnings: one swear word (the F word)
---------------------------------------------------------
Virgil has only been with them five days, his room is still bare and colourless aside from the few cuddly toys Patton bought five minutes after leaving his old foster home and the hand painted sign on the other side of his door displaying his name in a pastel purple which Logan had so carefully made with obvious input from his husband (that totally matches their own Patton had him make to make sure Virgil didn't feel left out). The few clothes he has barely taking up a quarter of his wardrobe, Logan insists he'll take him shopping tomorrow for some new clothes as well as school clothes and more bedroom furniture and accessories to make it more him.
But he's still getting used to the house and his new dads (His. Dads.). It's not that they're not nice people, it's just that Virgil's never had any parents before in his so few years on the planet, he doesn't know how to behave or what they're expecting. So, he stays quiet, does what he's told, and always agrees with his dads. Which means he's baked with his dad more than once already, even helped bake his own welcome home cookies, and he's sat with his other dad while he's read aloud to him every night before bed.
His dads adapted to him easily, leaving the door open just a little bit on a night for him to sleep comfortably and didn't push for him to eat so much for breakfast. But Virgil still wasn't open with them, he still stifled his little giggles and didn't ask for anything he wanted and, well, they are worried dads. They know, theoretically, that Virgil will open up to them and trust them more as their relationship develops but it's kept them up on more than a few nights for various reasons and many 'what if' questions.
But they set these worries aside in favour of fawning over their son (Their. Son.), hopefully not too much to drive him away (which Patton worries about) but enough to make him feel accepted and one of the family (which Logan worries about).
"Virge?" Patton calls out as he finishes setting the dining table for the three of them, it's almost time for dinner but he needs to talk to Virgil about a little something first.
"Yes?" Virgil pokes his head around the corner from the living room where he's been trying to read a book that Logan had given him the day after he moved in.
Patton only feels a little bad that Virgil hasn't called him 'dad' yet (or Logan for that matter) but pushes that aside, he doesn't want to pressure Virgil into anything. So, he moves into the living room, ushering Virgil to sit next to him on the couch.
"Dinner is almost ready, sweat pea, but I just wanted to say a few things first," Patton says but when he sees the small panic in Virgil's expression and posture he clarifies, "nothing bad, Virge, I promise, just a few, hmm, house rules, shall we call them?"
Virgil gives a weak nod and his tension doesn't quite fade but Patton knows it's better to do this now than later on.
"Firstly, chores will be a thing but we don't want you doing too much or things you can't handle and you'll get pocket money for doing them too which you can spend on anything you want, within reason though, I think Logan will be a bit more strict on that rule than I will but shhh," Patton says, easing up as Virgil smiles weakly at him.
"Also, just keep your room clean, I know there's not much to mess it up right now but when we get stuff just put things back where they should be."
He pauses for a moment to think.
"Please don't go outside when we're not downstairs or awake, we want you to stay safe and we want to keep an eye on you at least for now. And if you do wake up late at night come wake us up for whatever reason, if you want a drink or if you've had a nightmare or if you just want to talk to us, okay?"
Virgil nods and repeats, "okay."
"Oh, and most of all, in this house, we don't say bad words," Patton finishes with a smile, trying to ease things up after such a serious conversation, and Virgil nods, smiling just a little.
But then there's a loud, abrupt smash of glass from the kitchen and both Patton and Virgil freeze, heads turning quick to that direction only to hear Logan yell "Fuck!" loud and exasperated. There's no screaming or crying or anything, so, Patton knows he's okay really and he opens he mouth to yell at him for swearing but there's a soft giggle coming from next to him.
Virgil's still sitting next to him, hand over his mouth and he giggles into his fingers, eyes shining with humour, his cheeks a little rosy pink which Patton just wants to pinch and kiss.
"Logan F Sanders!" Patton gasps out, shocked between giggles of his own, "how dare you swear in front of our son!"
"Oh, god," they hear Logan whisper faintly before he calls out, "sorry, dear!"
Patton turns to Virgil who's still smiling, and Patton can't help beaming himself at the sight of his son finally starting to relax, he knows it'll take time, but a small smile and a bit of a giggle is a start.
"We don't usually say bad words in this house, sometimes Papa can't help himself," Patton explains, running a hand though Virgil's hair before pressing a kiss to his forehead, "why don't you go sit at the table and I'll go give Papa a telling off?"
Virgil nods and rushes off to the table with an uttering of "yes, dad" picking his book up on the way out – Patton knows he'll have to take the book off him to eat but for now he can enjoy it.
Patton makes his way to the kitchen, watching his flustered husband pouring shards of glass into the bin for a moment before he comes up behind him and wraps his arms around Logan's middle. Logan gladly leans back into the touch, smiling at the contact when Patton leans his chin on his shoulder.
"Virgil laughed, you know," Patton breathes out, voice fond and soft, "he laughed when you swore, and he was smiling at me all the time I was telling him the rules. I think, Lo, I think this might be it."
And Logan sighs, fingers running over Patton's hands around his middle, "it'll take time, love, I know you're hopeful, but it's not even been a week yet, he might not open up for a good while, just don't get your hopes up."
Patton presses the smallest of kisses to his cheek before whispering, "I've got to be hopeful for the both of us then, Mr Miserable."
He lets Logan out of the hug who immediately takes the dinner out of the oven before he starts plating them up.
"Besides, he rather reminds me of another emotionally confused adorable little boy I used to know."
With that Patton takes his and Virgil's food through to the dining room, reminding Virgil that dinner time is a book free zone (for both he and Logan), leaving Logan a little stunned behind in the kitchen before he's smiling and joining them for dinner.
