Patton is a bundle of nerves. A different kind of nerves than usual. He's usually full of bright, blinding, bubbly energy. Not today. Today is special. It's the start of winter break. Well, not for him but for Virgil.

His boyfriend had gotten into the college of his dreams - to pursue art after Patton had convinced him to do it for himself and not for anyone else or for his future - and today was the day he was coming home for winter.

Virgil's dads had gladly let him stay on their front porch for the morning, they were both as excited and nervous as Patton to see their son and Patton was almost like a second son to them.

So, here Patton sits on the bench on the porch, fingers nervously fiddling with the ends of his shirt, his legs bouncing, eyes glancing every two seconds up and down the road.

Finally, the all too familiar car rounds the corner and parks into the drive. Patton tries his hardest not to immediately get up off the bench and run over to Virgil but he just can't help himself, practically jumping up off the bench and waiting by the steps of the porch. Watching as Virgil gets out of his car, grabbing his backpack but leaving his suitcase and other things in the car as he locks it behind him.

"Patton," Virgil breathes out, almost as if he hadn't expected the other to be there although Patton had texted him and repeatedly asked if it was alright if he came to greet him. Even these small things make Virgil aware of just how sweet his boyfriend is.

Patton smiles, soft and shy, as Virgil comes closer, stopping standing on the steps inches in front of the other. They stay there, almost stock still, just staring at each other, those soft smiles on their faces.

Then suddenly Virgil's wrapping his arms around Patton, hugging his close and tight, conveying those months of missing him into it.

But just in case Virgil whispers, "I missed you." His voice soft, gentle, and maybe a bit teary but Patton doesn't say anything, he just hugs the other tighter.

"I missed you too, Virge," he says, fingers clinging to the back of Virgil's hoodie, desperately not wanting to let him go, "I missed you so, so much."

Virgil pulls back at that, brows furrowed as he observes Patton's expression.

Clearly something must be off because he asks, "what's wrong?"

And Patton pauses, stuck between telling his boyfriend that everything is fine just that he misses him but he knows he shouldn't. Virgil always makes an effort to tell him when something is wrong, so, he should return it.

"I've just been, I don't know, worried I suppose," Patton says, averting his eyes for a moment, but Virgil's looking at him with such worry and fondness that he spills everything.

"I thought that, well, maybe you'd forget about me," Patton confesses, face flushing at how silly that sounds, "I just- you're gone and you kept telling me how great the people were there and you made so many new friends, I thought- I mean, I doubted myself. What if you forgot about me? What if you didn't need me anymore?"

Virgil lets out a soft sort of noise in the back of his throat and Patton fight not to recoil and scramble out of Virgil's arms with apologies spilling from his lips.

"How could I ever forget about you?" Virgil says in the softest voice, bringing his hands up to cup Patton's cheeks, carefully forcing eye contact.

"I couldn't forget about you if I tried, Patton," he confesses, gentle smile playing on his lips, "you're constantly on my mind, when I'm not texting or calling you I'm just thinking about you, about things I want to do when I see you and things I can tell you next time I call you. And, goodness, Patton, I don't think I ever want to forget about you."

And Patton is most definitely not crying standing here on Virgil's porch with Virgil holding him like he's so precious. He gets his revenge when he gives Virgil a welcome home present.
