I Won't Date You

Gary's POV:

"Hi. Can I help you find anything?" A librarian asked me quietly. I nodded and walked over. "Do you have the book 'A History of Soulmates'?" She nodded and led me to the history section before pointing to a book. She said, "It's right there." before walking away. I took the book off the shelf and went to read it on one of the couches. There was a man sitting there reading, completely oblivious to the world around him. I looked at the cover of the book and immediately understood why. He was reading a book about trans people, and he seemed extremely interested. I tapped him on the shoulder and whispered "Hi, my name is Gary Adams. How are you today?" He responded in a higher pitched voice than I expected. "I'm good. How are you?" I simply responded with a "Good." That was all I needed, but I continued the conversation, hoping we would leave and continue talking. He was cute, but not my type. What I needed was a friend out here.

"What's a guy like you doing in a library?" He shook his head and scoffed at my question. "Listen, you clearly figured out I'm trans. So what are you going to do? Try to kill me, shout slurs, what?" I shook my head. "None of that. I... I wanted to know if we could hang out somewhere else. I just moved here and I need a friend. I think you might need someone to have your back too." He nodded and sighed. "Sorry I accused you, man. I've had bad experiences before." I nodded my head and gave a reassuring smile. "It's fine dude. I get it. I didn't catch your name." He smiled and wrote his number on a piece of paper. "It's Lak... Lane. It's Lane." I nodded and took the paper from him. "See you around Lane" He stood up and left and all I could think was 'He seems nice. But I wouldn't date him'

I wanted to explain the last chapter. Rex as one of the main characters will talk more in his head than to others. I was going to use him as more of an internalizing narrator, rather than an externalizing narrator like Gary. I want their differences to be seen in even the way they think and speak. I believe that this will help the story but I'm open to suggestions on making these characters better, within an extent.
