Kate was gone. She was really gone. I couldn't believe it I just couldn't. I knew it was Ari, but why did he shoot Kate? I know it's a terrible thing to think about, but he had a clear shot at my dad. Why didn't he shoot him? That was why he was here. Don't get me wrong I'm glad my dad is still alive and that he didn't get shot, but I just can't understand why he shot Kate instead of him. I knew that my dad was puzzled as well as upset about the whole thing. It was night time and it was pouring down rain. I walked into the squad room coming from the break room with a coffee for my dad and a soda for me.
"I-I don't know." I heard him say.
I walked over to him with an expression on his face like he was looking for something. I put the coffee on his desk as the elevator opens and Tony and Tim walk over to me and dad.
"Found Ari's sniper's nest, Boss." Tony said.
"Roof of the abandoned office building to the east." Tim said.
Tony pulled out an evidence bag from his inner jacket pocket with three spent casings in individual jars.
"Didn't police his brass." Tony said.
Dad looks up and stood up as he walked around his desk past me and took the bag from Tony. He held the bag under his desk lamp to get a better look at the casings.
"They're Laupa .308s." Tim stated.
Tony gave him a look
"I-I didn't mean that you couldn't see that, Boss." Tim said.
Dad shrugged. "I can't, without my glasses."
Tony and Tim look at each other then back at dad.
"Lapuas. Match-grade sniper ammo. Did you guys find any bullets?" I asked them.
"Uh, none that matched the casings. I left three guys on the roof searching." Tony replied.
Nobody said a word as dad still examines the casings.
"McGee and I will go back to the roof, Boss." Tony said.
Dad gave Tony back the evidence bag as Tony flinched, expecting a slap on the back of the head.
"Tony you're soaking wet. Go put some dry clothes on." dad said patting his back and walking over to the window.
Tony stares at dad then looked at us.
"Ari's rooftop wasn't much higher than ours. Rooflines behind were lower. No telling how far a full metal jacket bullet would go after killing Kate." dad said.
"How's he know it's a full metal jacket?" Tim quietly asked so only me and Tony could hear.
"Didn't you see Kate?" I asked him.
"I didn't want to." Tim said.
"Her head was intact." Tony said.
"So...she didn't look bad?" Tim asked.
"No. No, not at all, probie. In fact, a little mortuary putty right here..." Tony pokes Tim's forehead. "...and she'll be good as new. Course, she was having a bad hair day, though, right back here..." He rubbed the back of Tim's head. "...'cause a full metal jacket will put a hole the size of a grapefruit right about here." He slapped the back of Tim's head.
